Long-term survival on LVAD support: Device complications and end-organ dysfunction limit long-term success

Imad M. Hariri et al.

Summary: Preoperative variables such as age, race, and history of bypass surgery can predict extended survival in LVAD implant patients, while postoperative adverse events and end-organ dysfunction may negatively impact long-term survival.

Representation matters: a call for inclusivity and equity in heart failure clinical trials

Nosheen Reza et al.

Summary: The burden of heart failure, particularly heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), is significant worldwide. However, there is underrepresentation of individuals from minority sex, gender, race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic groups in clinical trials for HFrEF. This leads to disparities in access to treatment and outcomes within these populations. This article emphasizes the need for diverse populations to be included in HFrEF clinical trials and proposes strategies to improve inclusivity.

Five-Year Outcomes in Patients With Fully Magnetically Levitated vs Axial-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices in the MOMENTUM 3 Randomized Trial

Mandeep R. Mehra et al.

Summary: This observational follow-up study of patients from the MOMENTUM 3 randomized trial found that patients who received a fully magnetically levitated centrifugal-flow LVAD had better composite outcomes and higher overall survival rates at 5 years. These findings support the use of fully magnetically levitated LVAD.

Mandeep R. Mehra et al.

Summary: The study enrolled 2200 HM3 implanted patients and compared outcomes including survival and major adverse events at 2 years between CAP and pivotal trial cohorts. Despite sicker patients in the CAP group, the 2-year primary endpoint and overall survival were similar among CAP and pivotal cohorts.

Impact of Race on Clinical Outcomes After Implantation With a Fully Magnetically Levitated Left Ventricular Assist Device An Analysis From the MOMENTUM 3 Trial

Farooq H. Sheikh et al.

Summary: The study examined outcomes of Black and White patients with advanced heart failure using a HeartMate 3 left ventricular assist device. While survival rates did not differ by race, Black patients experienced higher rates of adverse events and smaller gains in functional capacity and quality of life compared to White patients. Efforts are needed to address and overcome these disparities.
