Ionization energies and ionization-induced structural changes in 2-phenylethylamine and its monohydrate

Yair Yifrach et al.

Summary: We conducted resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization experiments and quantum chemical calculations to study the interactions between the phenyl ring and amino group in the neurotransmitter prototypes 2-phenylethylamine (PEA) and its monohydrate. The ionization energies (IEs) and appearance energy of PEA and PEA-H2O were measured, and their upper bounds were found to be 8.63 +/- 0.03 and 8.62 +/- 0.04 eV, respectively. The electrostatic potential maps revealed charge separation and different geometries upon ionization, leading to distinct exit channels.

Experimental/Computational Study on the Impact of Fluorine on the Structure and Noncovalent Interactions in the Monohydrated Cluster of ortho-Fluorinated 2-Phenylethylamine

Rami Rahimi et al.

Summary: The effect of fluorine on conformational flexibility and noncovalent interactions of the medicinal compound 2-FPEA was studied using resonance-enhanced two-photon ionization and ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopies. The results showed that the hydrogen-bonded structure between 2-FPEA and water played a significant role in the stability of the cluster.

Revealing the Structure and Noncovalent Interactions of Isolated Molecules by Laser-Desorption/Ionization-Loss Stimulated Raman Spectroscopy and Quantum Calculations

Afik Shachar et al.

Summary: The study introduced laser-desorption jet-cooling/ionization-loss stimulated Raman spectroscopy for obtaining Raman spectral signatures of nonvolatile molecules in the gas phase. By comparing the vibrational features of the most abundant conformer of tryptamine, the study revealed insights into the electronic structure and noncovalent interactions affecting the structure. This approach provides promising benefits for future studies in accessing vibrational signatures of isolated nonvolatile molecules.

A compact and cost-effective laser desorption source for molecular beam generation: comparison with simulations

Afik Shachar et al.

Summary: The development of laser-desorption jet-cooling technology allows for studying low vapor pressure molecules in the gas phase. Through designing and assembling a compact laser-desorption source and coupling it with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, researchers are able to investigate the spectroscopy of cooled biomolecules. By modeling the molecular beam using the direct simulation Monte Carlo method, operational parameters are determined and seven conformers are identified within the molecular beam.

Conformational changes in hydroxyl functional groups upon hydration: the case study of endo fenchol

Elias M. Neeman et al.

Summary: The study examined the hydration of endo-fenchol in the gas phase using Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, resulting in the observation of an endo-fenchol-water complex. It was discovered that water induced an alteration in the arrangement of the hydroxyl group, stabilizing the observed species through a hydrogen bond. This study emphasized the flexibility of alcohol molecules and the impact of strong and weak hydrogen bonds on the stabilization of clusters with water.
