Chirality-Specific Unidirectional Rotation of Molecular Motors on Cu(111)

Monika Schied et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of molecular motors on solid surfaces. Single motor molecules adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface are excited by voltage pulses from an STM tip, leading to their rotation around a fixed pivot point. The rotation direction of each molecule is found to be enantiomer-specific, determined by its chirality.

Construction and Structural Transformation of Metal-Organic Nanostructures Induced by Alkali Metals and Alkali Metal Salts

Rujia Hou et al.

Summary: Metal-organic nanostructures based on Na and NaCl were constructed and visualized using scanning tunneling microscopy imaging and density functional theory calculations. The connection and difference between Na and NaCl in the structural evolution were revealed through a reverse structural transformation achieved by dosing iodine. These findings provide fundamental insights into the fabrication and evolution of alkali-based metal-organic nanostructures.

A Nanocar and Rotor in One Molecule

Kwan Ho Au-Yeung et al.

Summary: Depending on its adsorption conformation, a zwitterionic single-molecule machine can act as a unidirectional rotor or a fast-drivable molecule vehicle (nanocar) on the Au(111) surface. The conformation can be selected by tuning the surface coverage. The inelastic tunneling excitation plays a role in both the rotation of the rotor and the movement of the nanocar under bias voltage pulses.

Controlling the Spin States of FeTBrPP on Au(111)

Xiangzhi Meng et al.

Summary: Spin-flip excitations of iron porphyrin molecules on Au(111) were investigated using a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope. The molecules exhibited two distinct adsorption configurations on the surface, with different magnetic anisotropy energies. Density functional theory calculations showed that the different structures and excitation energies were a result of different occupations of the Fe 3d levels. We demonstrated that the magnetic anisotropy energy could be controlled by changing the adsorption site, orientation, or tip-molecule distance.

Molecular-Scale Chemical Imaging of the Orientation of an On-Surface Coordination Complex by Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy

Zhen-Feng Cai et al.

Summary: Metal-organic coordination structures at interfaces are crucial in biological and chemical systems. Understanding the molecular specificity, orientation, and spatial distribution of coordination complexes at the nanometer scale is essential for effective molecular engineering of nanostructures and fabrication of functional devices with controllable properties. Using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, cobalt(II) tetraphenyl-porphyrin coordination species on a single molecule scale can be investigated, providing insights into adsorption configuration and molecular orientation.
