Open-Cage Fullerene as a Selective Molecular Trap for LiF/[BeF]+

Rui Gao et al.

Summary: This study reports the preparation of an open-cage C-60 derivative with a hydroxy group that can coordinate to metal cations, allowing the trapping of lithium cations in LiF and beryllium cations in [BeF](+). Other metal salts were unable to be inserted under similar conditions. The structure of MF in the cage was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, providing a unique example of a Li bond.

Independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition: A new method for visual study of interactions in chemical systems

Tian Lu et al.

Summary: The powerful independent gradient model (IGM) method has limitations in graphically studying weak interactions. In this article, an improved version of IGM, called IGM based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings. The rigorous physical background of IGMH is demonstrated through various application examples, showcasing its important value in intuitively understanding interactions in chemical systems.

Synthesis of Open-Cage Fullerenes Containing a H-Bond between the Encapsulated Water Molecule and the Amide Moiety on the Rim of the Orifice

Zhen Liu et al.

Summary: Further hydrolysis of a fullerene derivative with an epoxy group on the rim of the orifice resulted in the formation of a new open-cage fullerene compound with a 17-membered orifice and an amide group directly above it. The inclusion ratio of water in the new compound reached 100% after heating with water. The amide group above the orifice effectively blocks the opening and forms a hydrogen bond with the enclosed water molecule.

Chiral Open-[60]Fullerene Ligands with Giant Dissymmetry Factors

Yoshifumi Hashikawa et al.

Summary: In this study, we showcase the Li+-coordination behavior and optical resolution of three chiral open-[60]fullerene ligands, demonstrating a giant dissymmetry factor up to 0.20 due to the congenital topology of the spherical pi-conjugation.

Precise Fixation of an NO Molecule inside Carbon Nanopores: A Long-Range Electron-Nuclear Interaction

Yoshifumi Hashikawa et al.

Summary: The synthesis of fullerene-based carbon nanopores enabled the precise placement of two nitric oxide molecules, demonstrating a long-range bimolecular magnetic interaction through paramagnetic relaxation enhancement of a water molecule in paired nanopores. This unique system offers potential applications in magnetic resonance imaging and other fields.
