Process hazard assessment of energetic ionic liquid with kinetic evaluation and thermal equilibrium

Gong Yue et al.

Summary: With the development of battery technology, research on materials for various parts is increasing. Ionic liquids are considered excellent electrolytes in the field of electrolytes and have been widely studied. However, there is limited research on the reaction and kinetics of ionic liquids, especially their safety at high temperatures. This study focuses on the safety of the common ionic liquid [Emim] NO3 at high temperatures and determines its basic reaction parameters through thermodynamic equation simulation.

At what ambient temperature can thermal runaway of a burning metal particle occur?

Elif Irem Senyurt et al.

Summary: A simplified heat and mass transfer model is used to predict thermal runaway of burning metal particles in an oxidizing gas. The model takes into account transition transport phenomena important for particles with sizes comparable to the mean free path of gas molecules. Different fuels like aluminum, magnesium, and boron are considered, with varying reaction kinetics and thermal accommodation coefficient values influencing the predicted results.

A comprehensive neural network model for predicting flash point of oxygenated fuels using a functional group approach

Baqer Aljaman et al.

Summary: In this study, artificial neural networks were used to develop a comprehensive model for predicting the flash point of petroleum fuels containing various oxygenated chemical classes. The model achieved satisfactory results by using functional groups, molecular weight, and branching index as inputs, and was able to predict flash points of complex oxygenated compounds and their mixtures.

Exploring the possibilities of energetic ionic liquids as non-toxic hypergolic bipropellants in liquid rocket engines

I. Isaac Sam et al.

Summary: Energetic ionic liquids (EILs) are being researched as high-energy fuels that can be used as bipropellant fuels along with green and non-toxic oxidizers like hydrogen peroxide. Caged ionic liquids, such as azoles and boranes, are used to enhance the performance of the propellant systems. Hydrogen peroxide is a promising candidate for replacing toxic oxidizers. The combination of EILs and hydrogen peroxide can be used in the multimode propulsion of small satellites.

Enhanced Energetic Performance of Aluminum Nanoparticles by Plasma Deposition of Perfluorinated Nanofilms

Prawal P. K. Agarwal et al.

Summary: The presence of a native oxide layer limits the performance of Al as a nanoenergetic material, but this issue can be resolved by coating the Al surface with a fluorocarbon nanofilm. This technique effectively turns the oxide layer into an energetic component and significantly enhances heat release during oxidation.

Ammonium Formate as a Safe, Energy-Dense Electrochemical Fuel Ionic Liquid

Zachary J. Schiffer et al.

Summary: This study investigates ammonium formate as an energy carrier. It can be economically produced through a simple reaction of ammonia and formic acid, and it is safe for transportation and storage due to its solid state under ambient conditions. The study demonstrates an electrochemical cell that decomposes ammonium formate to produce hydrogen efficiently.

Thermal stability and exothermic behaviour of imidazole ionic liquids with different anion types under oxidising and inert atmospheres

Wen-Tao Wang et al.

Summary: Ionic liquids (ILs) are special salts that can be liquid at room temperature, and their thermal stability and decomposition mechanisms were studied in this research. Four typical imidazole ILs showed diverse thermal effects in different gas environments, providing safety guidance for their handling and prevention of accidents. The study presented an innovative method to evaluate the thermal behavior of ILs and understand their decomposition processes.

Surface-Functionalized Boron Nanoparticles with Reduced Oxide Content by Nonthermal Plasma Processing for Nanoenergetic Applications

Prawal P. K. Agarwal et al.

Summary: The development of an in situ nonthermal plasma technology improved the oxidation and energy release of boron nanoparticles. Treatment with nonthermal hydrogen plasma and PECVD using perfluorodecalin resulted in a reduction of the surface oxide layer and formation of a passivation barrier, leading to increased metallic boron content and energy release. The PECVD coating provided excellent passivation against air and humidity for 60 days, indicating the potential benefits for nanoenergetic applications.
