Grain boundary energies in yttria-stabilized zirconia

Shen J. Dillon et al.

Summary: By investigating the variation of grain boundary energy, the characteristics of grain boundaries in 8% yttria-stabilized zirconia were identified, with a focus on the impact of [100] orientation and [100] twist boundaries. The study results indicate that by manipulating the microstructure to increase the relative areas of [100] twist boundaries, the oxygen ion conductivity of the material can be enhanced.

Onset of electronic conductivity in nanometer thick films of yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) at high electric fields

J. L. Vazquez-Arce et al.

Summary: Electrochemical cells fabricated on a silicon wafer demonstrate stable currents and open circuit voltage. The existence of virtual electrodes and unreacted material contributes to the generation of steady currents through reactions with the electrodes and internal reactions within the electrolyte. The calculated time to reach a steady state is inversely proportional to the incubation time, the second power of electric field strength, and the diffusion coefficient of oxygen vacancies.

Thickness effect of Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia as the electrolyte in all-solid-state thin-film supercapacitor with a wide operating temperature range

J. L. Vazquez-Arce et al.

Summary: This research introduces a thin-film supercapacitor based on materials manufacturing technologies, which can meet new electronic challenges and improve energy density and performance under extreme operating conditions. By adjusting thickness and temperature, the key to improving energy density lies in activating ionic conduction in the electrolyte.

High ionic conductivity of ultralow yttria concentration yttria-stabilized zirconia thin films

Wenfei Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the ionic conductivity of ultralow yttria concentration yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) thin films synthesized by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The high conductivity values are observed at test temperatures, and the outstanding electrical property is attributed to the true size effect. The effects of YSZ thin film thickness and annealing process on their conductivities are also studied.

Theoretical investigation of diffusion and electrical properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia thin film

Le Thu Lam et al.

Summary: Theoretical investigation of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) thin film with fluorite structure reveals lattice expansion with thickness reduction. The diffusion coefficient and ionic conductivity of YSZ thin film are significantly enhanced with thickness ranging from 10 nm to 20 nm compared to bulk YSZ. The influence of external layers on diffusion and electrical properties decreases with increasing thickness, becoming negligible above 1000 nm. Future research should consider the impact of external layers on YSZ thin film properties.
