Molten-Volcanic-Ash-Phobic Thermal Barrier Coating based on Biomimetic Structure

Yiqian Guo et al.

Summary: Volcanic ash poses a significant threat to aviation safety due to its ability to melt at temperatures lower than those encountered in aero-engine operation, leading to damage to thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, researchers developed a molten-volcanic-ash-phobic TBC inspired by natural superhydrophobic surfaces, such as the lotus leaf. The TBCs demonstrated resistance to silicate wetting at high temperatures, owing to the lotus-leaf-like dual-scale microstructure, which emulates the presence of nanoparticles. These findings could contribute to the development of next-generation aviation engines with enhanced resistance to environmental siliceous debris.

The CMAS corrosion behavior of high-entropy (Y0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Tm0.2Yb0.2)4Hf3O12 hafnate material prepared by ultrafast high-temperature sintering (UHS)

Fuxing Ye et al.

Summary: In this study, a promising entropy-stabilized (Y0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Tm0.2Yb0.2)4Hf3O12 (5YH) hafnate prepared by ultrafast high-temperature sin-tering was investigated for its corrosion and wetting behavior in molten CMAS environment. The results showed that the precipitation of high-entropy apatite phase promoted the formation of HfO2 phase, improving the density and stability of the reaction layer, thus hindering the penetration of molten CMAS.

Thermal corrosion behavior of Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics exposed to calcium-ferrum-alumina-silicate (CFAS) at 1400 degrees C

Ling He et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between CFAS deposit and Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics was investigated, and it was found that Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics exhibit high resistance to infiltration of CFAS melt. Microstructure characterization showed that a continuous reaction layer composed mainly of Yb-Ca-Si apatite formed between Yb4Hf3O12 and CFAS, inhibiting further infiltration of CFAS. Before the formation of the reaction layer, CFAS melts underwent a crystallization process, leading to the precipitation of CaYbFeAlSi-garnet, which increased the viscosity and inhibited the fluidity of CFAS.

Water vapor corrosion behavior and failure mechanism of air sprayed bi-layer Yb2Si2O7/SiC and tri-layer Yb2Si2O7/ (SiCw-Mullite)/SiC environmental barrier coating

Pengju Chen et al.

Summary: In order to improve the corrosion resistance of Cf/SiC composites in a water vapor oxygen coupled environment, bilayer Yb2Si2O7/SiC and tri-layer Yb2Si2O7/(SiCw-Mullite, SM)/SiC environment barrier coatings were designed and prepared. The mass loss of the bilayer coating was 17.24 x 10-3 g cm-2 after 200 h oxidation at 1673 K, resulting in a compression strength retention rate of only 79.44%. However, the mass loss of the trilayer coating was only 2.93 x 10-3 g cm-2 with an average compression strength retention rate of 98.79% due to the presence of SiC whiskers in the SM middle coating.

Longkang Cong et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel high entropy hafnate (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 was synthesized and characterized for potential use as a thermal barrier coating (TBC) material in gas turbines. The (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 demonstrated excellent phase stability, chemical compatibility with Al2O3, and lower thermal conductivity compared to other TBC materials. These results suggest that (Y0.2Gd0.2Dy0.2Er0.2Yb0.2)(2)Hf2O7 is a promising candidate for the next generation TBC materials.

Summary: The high-entropy material HECO shows smaller corrosion depth than LCO except for partial exfoliation. The sluggish diffusion effect of HECO inhibits nucleation of corrosion products and leads to a reduction in corrosion depth through horizontal growth. Additionally, the correlation between the aggressiveness of molten salt and the corrosion alleviation is observed.

Effect of phosphorus-based additives on ash fusion characteristics of high-sodium coal under gasification condition

Xianxian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ash fusion characteristics and melting mechanism of high-sodium coals with the addition of phosphorus-based additives under gasification conditions. It is found that the phosphorus-based additives react with the high-sodium coal ash to generate high melting point phosphates, which enhance the ash fusion temperatures. However, the formation of low-temperature eutectic silicates accelerates the melting process, weakening the effect of the phosphorus-based additives on the ash fusion temperatures of high-sodium coals. This research provides important insights into the melting behavior of high-sodium coal ash in gasification environments.

TGO growth and kinetic study of single and double layered TBC systems

Kadir Mert Doleker et al.

Summary: Thermal barrier coating (TBC) systems are widely used to extend the lifetime of hot section components in gas turbines, but oxidation degradation at high temperature is still inevitable. In this study, YSZ/CoNiCrAlY/Inconel 718 and LZO/YSZ/CoNiCrAlY/Inconel 718 TBC systems were exposed to high temperature oxidation tests, with the double-layered LZO/YSZ TBC system showing better performance but leading to crack formation. Higher temperatures and longer oxidation periods can degrade the integrity of top coatings due to the sintering effect. Chemical incompatibility did not affect the interface durability of the LZO/YSZ TBC system during the oxidation tests.
