Thermal corrosion behavior of Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics exposed to calcium-ferrum-alumina-silicate (CFAS) at 1400 degrees C

Ling He et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between CFAS deposit and Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics was investigated, and it was found that Yb4Hf3O12 ceramics exhibit high resistance to infiltration of CFAS melt. Microstructure characterization showed that a continuous reaction layer composed mainly of Yb-Ca-Si apatite formed between Yb4Hf3O12 and CFAS, inhibiting further infiltration of CFAS. Before the formation of the reaction layer, CFAS melts underwent a crystallization process, leading to the precipitation of CaYbFeAlSi-garnet, which increased the viscosity and inhibited the fluidity of CFAS.

Degradation mechanism of SiCf/SiC composites after long-time water vapor and oxygen corrosion at 1300 °C

Jin Zhang et al.

Summary: The corrosion behavior of SiCf/SiC composites in a high-temperature mixed vapor and oxygen environment has been studied. It has been found that the formation of liquid amorphous silica, which fills the gaps left by the oxidation of the carbon interphase, is highly detrimental due to its strong bonding with fibers and the stress accumulation and cracking within the silica layers, causing fiber breakage and severe degradation of the composites.

Failure mechanism of ytterbium silicate/silicon bi-layer environmental barrier coatings on SiCf/SiC composites upon long-time water vapor and oxygen corrosion test

Jinping Du et al.

Summary: In this study, an EBC system composed of Yb2Si2O7 topcoats and Si bond coats was prepared using APS for SiCf/SiC composites. The corrosion and failure mechanisms of the EBC system in a water vapor-oxygen environment were investigated. The results showed that the SiCf/SiC composites exhibited excellent stability under the protection of the EBCs. Vertical mud cracks generated by thermal cycles served as intrusion passages for corrosion species, leading to the peeling off of the Yb2Si2O7 topcoat. The residue of the Si bond coat played a crucial role in protecting the substrates from rapid corrosion.

Recent advancements in self-healing materials: Mechanicals, performances and features

Nan Wen et al.

Summary: Self-healing materials have the ability to partially or completely repair themselves after being damaged, restoring the material's performance to its original state. They are classified into two strategies: extrinsic mechanism and intrinsic mechanism, differing in whether a healing agent is added during the repair process. This review focuses on the mechanical properties and features of self-healing materials, as well as the future development outlook.
