Dielectric relaxation and charge carrier mechanism in doped Ce1-xSmxO2-δ (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) nanoceramics: An investigation with dielectric spectroscopy

Chandrani Nath et al.

Summary: In this study, the structural, dielectric, and ionic conduction properties of doped Ce1-xSmxO2-delta (0 <= x <= 0.3) nanocrystalline ceramics were investigated. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy revealed a mixture of Ce4+ and Ce3+ charge states induced by non-stoichiometry, with decreasing Ce3+ ion content as Sm concentration increased. Impedance analysis suggested that both grains and grain boundaries contributed to overall conductivity, with grain boundaries playing a dominant role. Enhanced conductivity was observed due to reduced grain size and increased interfaces in the nanostructured materials, facilitating faster ionic diffusion. The sample with x = 0.2 exhibited high conductivity, attributed to two Debye-type dipoles and a low frequency dipole relaxation caused by long-range migration of oxygen vacancies. This makes Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-delta an ideal candidate for applications.

Efficient catalytic selective hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Pt-supported on surface amino functionalized hexagonal BN nanosheets

Dong Yan et al.

Summary: We have developed a new and simple one-step ball milling method to prepare and functionalize hexagonal BN nanosheets. The influence of ball milling time on properties of the BN nanosheets was studied, and Pt/BN-U10-x catalysts were prepared and evaluated for the hydrogenation of furfural. It was found that the amino-functionalized BN-U10-x supports enhanced electron transfer with Pt, resulting in electron-rich and stable Pt nanoparticles, which facilitated the activation of H2 and adsorption of furfural by C=O. Among the catalysts, Pt/BN-U10-12 exhibited good activity with high conversion and selectivity.

Mechanical properties and high temperature failure mechanism of carbon fibers reinforced polysilazane-derived SiCN ceramic matrix composites via PIP process

Yuelong Tian et al.

Summary: In this study, carbon fibers reinforced SiCN ceramic matrix composites (C/SiCN) were prepared using homemade polysilazanes (PSN-T03) via PIP. It was found that SiCN ceramics began to lose weight at 1400 degrees C, leading to a collapse in the mechanical properties of C/SiCN composites above this temperature.

Shan Wang et al.

Summary: By dispersing carbon nanotubes into the SiCN ceramic matrix, SiCN(CNTs) composite ceramics were fabricated to enhance the microwave absorption effect. The optimum absorption performance was achieved at 18 GHz with a pyrolysis temperature of 1100 degrees Celsius, and a wider effective absorption bandwidth was revealed by further increasing the sample thickness.

Summary: This study prepared a dense polymer-derived silicon carbonitride ceramic using precursor infiltration and pyrolysis technique to reduce the temperature sensitivity of PDC-SiCN-based pressure sensors. After three PIP cycles, the conductivity of SiCN ceramics significantly increased, leading to a decrease in temperature sensitivity of the pressure sensor.

Summary: The addition of h-BN nanosheets during spark plasma sintering process improved the fracture toughness and strength of Si3N4, while slowing down the alpha -> beta phase transformation. Proper control of the particle size and content of h-BN nanosheets can effectively enhance the mechanical properties of Si3N4.

Decoupling of inter-particle polarization and intra-particle polarization in core-shell structured nanocomposites towards improved dielectric performance

Wenying Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates polymer nanocomposites containing a series of Al@Al2O3 nanofillers with different shell thicknesses. It demonstrates that forming an insulating shell enables independent control of intra-particle polarization and inter-particle polarization, leading to high dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. This core-shell structured nanocomposites not only surpass unmodified nanofiller composites in terms of dielectric properties, but also improve thermal conductivity and field resistivity, resulting in stable operation at low temperatures.
