Categorical perception of Mandarin lexical tones in language-delayed autistic children

Yicheng Rong et al.

Summary: This study examined the perception of lexical tones in language-delayed autistic children and found differences between autistic and non-autistic children. It also found that language ability is correlated with categorical perception performance in autistic children.

Human cortical encoding of pitch in tonal and non-tonal languages

Yuanning Li et al.

Summary: Different languages use different vocal sounds to convey meaning, with some variations in pitch processing between tonal and non-tonal languages like Mandarin Chinese and English. However, there is a shared cortical auditory feature processing mechanism that is language-general, but also shows some language specificity at the population level.

Categorical Perception of Pitch Contours and Voice Onset Time in Mandarin-Speaking Adolescents With Autism Spectrum Disorders

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: This study compared the categorical perception of lexical tones and voice onset time in Mandarin-speaking adolescents with ASD and found that the basic CP pattern of perceiving native lexical tones and VOT was largely preserved, although the degree of CP of VOT was greatly reduced in ASD participants. Furthermore, the degree of CP of lexical tones correlated with language ability and digit span in individuals with ASD.

Summary: Research suggests that individuals with ASD are more likely to have perfect pitch and prefer music to language. Music-assisted programmes may increase attention to spoken words and potentially improve communication skills for ASD children.

Lifelong Tone Language Experience does not Eliminate Deficits in Neural Encoding of Pitch in Autism Spectrum Disorder

Summary: The study found that individuals with ASD have deficits in pitch processing, and contrary to the hypothesis, this linguistic pitch encoding impairment associated with ASD may not be eliminated by lifelong sensory experience.
