Assessment of mechanical properties of steel fiber reinforced mortar mixtures containing lightweight aggregates improved by bacteria

Semsi Yazici et al.

Summary: The porous nature and tendency to crack of lightweight aggregate are two main factors leading to the penetration of aggressive ions into concrete matrix. However, the inclusion of bacteria and nutrients in cementitious systems can lead to the precipitation of CaCO3 to fill the aggregate pores. This study found that different nutrient media have effects on the properties of concrete, and encapsulating the bacteria is necessary for protecting their viability and improving crack healing.

A review on the limitations of natural fibres and natural fibre composites with emphasis on tensile strength using coir as a case study

Chioma Ifeyinwa Madueke et al.

Summary: Natural fibres, such as coir, jute, flax, and hemp, have been explored for technical applications. However, these fibres exhibit non-uniformity in terms of length, diameter, and cross-sectional area, which affects their tensile strength. The use of different diameters for the same type of fibre has also resulted in inconsistent tensile properties.

Experimental Study of the Resistance to Influence of Aggressive Liquids on Lightweight Concrete

Marzena Kurpinska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of lightweight concrete under different corrosive conditions and found that concrete with foamed glass and sintered fly ash aggregates, showed better resistance to aggressive environments. Concrete samples exposed to aggressive solutions exhibited a long-term corrosion process, with chlorides being the most aggressive and sulfates being the least aggressive. Higher concentrations of corrosive factors led to faster corrosion processes, confirmed by pH measurements and microscopic examinations. The findings suggest that concrete with these specific aggregates are suitable for use in traditional construction as well as facilities exposed to aggressive environments such as the chemical industry and gas stations.
