Burial stylolites enhance karst dissolution and control cave geometry in heterolithic carbonates, Salitre Formation, Brazil

Cayo C. C. Pontes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship among the 2D geometry, stratigraphy, and petrophysical properties of a cave system developed in a Neoproterozoic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequence. The study found that bedding-parallel stylolites play an important role in the porosity and dissolution of the rocks. The presence of closely spaced and thicker stylolites correlates with higher karstification intensity, while greater spacing or absence of stylolites leads to less karstification. These findings have significant implications for predicting subsurface permeability in karstified carbonate reservoirs.

Pore network characteristics as a function of diagenesis: Implications for epigenic karstification in shallow-water carbonates

Renata E. B. Araujo et al.

Summary: Karst processes play a critical role in the development of porosity and permeability in carbonate reservoirs and aquifers. This study examines the interaction between fluid flow pathways and diagenesis in an epigenic karst setting in the Potiguar Basin, Brazil. The results demonstrate the importance of karst dissolution in creating karst cavities, and how various types of porosity can be connected to fractures, veins, and stylolites at the microscale. Additionally, karst dissolution can increase overall rock permeability through cement dissolution and fracturing during different diagenetic stages.

Advancements towards DFKN modelling: Incorporating fracture enlargement resulting from karstic dissolution in discrete fracture networks

Juliana A. G. Lopes et al.

Summary: This study presents a multiscale approach to develop a deterministic Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) model in low-porosity carbonate rocks, which includes fracture enlargement due to karstic dissolution. Through a case study using field and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery data, it is found that advanced stages of karstification can modify the aperture-length relationship of fractures, leading to a constant value of aperture as the degree of dissolution increases. This allows for quantitatively accounting for fracture enlargement and shows that it can significantly increase the transmissivity of a karstified fracture network without changing connectivity.

Xuebin Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and formation mechanisms of mixed siliciclastic-carbonate reservoirs in the Bozhong Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China, using a combination of reservoir geological and geochemical evidence. The results show that bioclastic-dominated mixed rocks represent high-quality reservoirs due to the presence of primary and secondary pores. The main diagenetic processes include micritization, cementation, dissolution, and compaction.

Silicification, flow pathways, and deep-seated hypogene dissolution controlled by structural and stratigraphic variability in a carbonate-siliciclastic sequence (Brazil)

Luca Pisani et al.

Summary: This paper documents the relationships between stratigraphy, structural patterns, silicification, and the spatial-morphological organization of a 3D multistorey cave system developed in a Neoproterozoic mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequence. The combination of lithology, silicification, fracture patterns, and petrophysical properties control the formation of high or low permeability zones, which are fundamental for the spatial organization of dissolution and the compartmentalization of the resulting conduit system. The Calixto Cave is an enlightening example for the complex speleogenetic history affecting a mixed carbonate-siliciclastic succession.

Karstified layers and caves formed by superposed epigenic dissolution along subaerial unconformities in carbonate rocks-Impact on reservoir-scale permeability

Fabio Luiz M. Bagni et al.

Summary: Superposed events of rock exposure, fracturing, and hydrological dynamics play important roles in epigenic karstification in carbonate reservoirs. This study investigates the effects of superposed meteoric dissolution events in carbonate rocks and suggests that subaerial unconformities can lead to better reservoir qualities by facilitating freshwater leaching and karstification. The study also highlights the importance of faults and fractures in controlling vertical pore distribution within hydrological zones and the role of water table fluctuations in the development of multilevel caves and conduits. The findings have implications for assessing reservoir location and quality in large areas.

Summary: The present study used a multitool approach to characterize fractures in large fracture corridors, caves, and canyons and investigated their impact on fluid flow in carbonate units. The study revealed that fracture corridors comprise multiple subvertical and conjugate fracture sets, which have a significant influence on fluid flow. Fault-controlled upwelling of low-T hydrothermal fluids tracked by travertines in a fold-and-thrust belt, Monte Alpi, southern apennines, Italy

L. Smeraglia et al.

Summary: Active faults within the southern Apennines fold-and-thrust belt control the upwelling of hydrothermal fluids at surface. The study in the Monte Alpi area reveals that travertines formed in a paleo-fluvial environment precipitated from CO2-rich meteoric-derived fluids. High-permeability fluid conduits localized along fault zones at fault intersections, while low-permeability fault zones were observed in clay smeared fault segments in shales and metapelites.

Flow pathways in multiple-direction fold hinges: Implications for fractured and karstified carbonate reservoirs

Cayo C. C. Pontes et al.

Summary: This study focused on the development of caves in carbonate units, investigating the roles of fractures and folds in the formation of karst conduits and flow pathways in carbonate reservoirs. The conduit shape, typically ellipsoidal in cross-section, reflects tectonic features and textural variations, with carbonate layers containing pyrite and low detritic mineral contents being favorable flow pathways. The development of the karst system was found to be related to fracture corridors formed along fold hinges, contributing to the formation of super-K zones.
