Arrested tectonic development: Preservation of high-temperature fabrics in the sinistral Cai?ara shear zone (Borborema province, northeastern Brazil)

Summary: The Caicara shear zone in northeastern Brazil is characterized by high-temperature mylonites. The zone shows limited over-print by low-temperature fabrics, suggesting that shearing ceased at an early stage of development. The dominant microstructures and kinematic criteria indicate sinistral shear and deformation at temperatures above -600 degrees C.

Ferroan A-type metagranites from the Pernambuco-Alagoas Domain, northeastern Brazil attest Tonian crustal extension

Summary: The southern Pernambuco-Alagoas (PEAL) Domain in northeastern Brazil is characterized by Cryogenian-Ediacaran calc-alkalic granitic rocks. The orthogneisses in the Santana do Ipanema Batholith of the region were studied to determine their age and petrogenesis. These orthogneisses contain mafic microgranular enclaves and have a flat-lying foliation. They have a metaluminous to slightly peraluminous composition and show fractionated rare-earth and trace element patterns.

The statherian anorogenic magmatism in the Paramirim Aulacogen, sa & SIM;o Francisco-Congo paleoplate: New data, synthesis and regional correlations

Summary: Fragmentation of continental masses is often associated with anorogenic magmatism, particularly Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs). The Paramirim Aulacogen, which formed between 1.77 and 0.67 Ga, is filled with anorogenic siliciclastic and acidic volcanic rocks along with subordinate carbonates. The study provides new geochemical and geochronological data, allowing the identification of four plutonic magmatism cycles and the interpretation of the formation of a Statherian Silicic Large Igneous Province (SLIP).

Review of tectonic inversion of sedimentary basins in NE and N Brazil: Analysis of mechanisms, timing and effects on structures and relief

Summary: Most intraplate areas worldwide experience compression characterized by thrust and strike-slip deformations due to a combination of far-field and near-field stresses. In NE and N Brazil, which are part of the South American intraplate, compressional tectonic inversions of sedimentary basins have occurred since the Late Cretaceous. These inversions are characterized by strike-slip and thrust fault regimes in NE Brazil and reverse stress regimes in N Brazil. Reactivated faults, folds, and dome structures are the most common inversion structures, leading to uplift of rift and post-rift sedimentary units. The interplay between far-field and near-field stresses explains the observed stress pattern in these regions.

A complex history of extension, subduction and collision in west Gondwana: Clues from the Riacho do Pontal orogen, Borborema Province (NE Brazil)

Summary: The geodynamic understanding of the Riacho do Pontal Orogen in Brazil has improved in recent years, with progress mainly made through geochemical and isotopic studies. However, the role of Neoproterozoic magmatism in the region is still not fully understood. In order to contribute to the debate, this study presents petrographic, geochemical, and isotopic data for a set of granitoids and metavolcanic rocks from the Internal and Central domains of the Riacho do Pontal Orogen. The results suggest that the Betania granite is part of an Ediacaran magmatic-arc system, while the Nova Olinda and Caboclo syenites are products of late-orogenic magmatism, and the Serra da Aldeia suite represents the final stages of post-orogenic activity.

Geochemical data, Nd and Hf isotopes and U-Pb geochronology of meta-mafic rocks from western Gondwana suture zone

Summary: This study presents and discusses geochemical and geochronological data of amphibolite and retro-eclogite from the West Gondwana orogen in NE Brazil. The research reveals evidence of magma generated in a subduction zone with contribution and recycling of crustal sedimentary material, as well as the presence of oceanic basalts in the Ceara Complex. The data support the interpretation that the eastern edge of the Santa Quit'eria magmatic arc constitutes an active margin with subduction of the Cryogenian oceanic crust.

Tracing a Neoproterozoic subduction to collision magmatism in the eastern Pernambuco-Alagoas domain, northeastern Brazil

Summary: The Pernambuco-Alagoas (PEAL) Domain in northeastern Brazil is known for its voluminous Cryogenian-Ediacaran granitic rocks formed during the convergence of the Sa & SIM;o Francisco Craton and the Borborem Province. New geochemical and isotopic data for the Correntes composite batholith suggest that the granitic rocks have intermediate to acid compositions, are enriched in large-ion lithophile elements, and exhibit isotopic characteristics similar to modern magmatic arcs of continental active margins. The Nd-isotope pattern in the rocks indicates a change in the lower crust source rocks over time, with greater contributions from crustal components in the late-to post-collisional rocks.

A Record of the Snowball Earth Events? The Parecis Basin May Encompass Three Major Neoproterozoic Glaciations on the Amazonian Craton

Summary: The Parecis Basin in the Amazonian craton has siliciclastic and carbonate rocks that potentially record intense paleoenvironmental changes related to glaciations. Carbonate rock samples from stratigraphic well 2ANP 0006 MT indicate negative excursions of delta C-13 correlated to the Sturtian and Marinoan glaciations. The presence of radiogenic Sr ratios in the Mirassol d'Oeste carbonate unit suggests continental influx during the Marinoan deglaciation.

U-Pb and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology and tectonic setting of the peralkaline magmatism in the Borborema Province (NE Brazil)

Summary: A study on the Aegirine-augite granite and syenite plutons and dikes in the Borborema Province provides chronological constraints using SHRIMP zircon U-Pb and laser step-heating 40Ar/39Ar determinations. The results suggest that the alkaline magmatism in the central and northern parts of the province occurred between 600 and 590 million years ago, shortly after the continental collisions that formed the province in the Ediacaran. The emplacement of these rocks was influenced by crustal extension and reactivation of deep fault segments.

Decratonization by rifting enables orogenic reworking and transcurrent dispersal of old terranes in NE Brazil

Summary: The dispersion and deformation of cratonic fragments within orogens require weakening of craton margins, leading to a process of decratonization. The Borborema Province in NE Brazil is one example of orogens that led to the amalgamation of Gondwana, with a period of extension and opening of narrow oceans preceding inversion and collision. This process involved the pulling away of the Sao Francisco Craton from the Benino-Nigerian Shield, followed by inversion of an oceanic basin and transpression.
