Ultrasparse and omnidirectional acoustic ventilated meta-barrier

Jiajie He et al.

Summary: This study proposes and demonstrates an ultrasparse, ultrathin, and ultralight acoustic ventilated meta-barrier that effectively blocks omnidirectional sound while allowing for free airflow. The meta-barrier is highly prohibitive to sound waves from all directions and maintains a high wind velocity ratio.

Causally-guided acoustic optimization of single-layer rigidly-backed micro-perforated partitions: Theory

Teresa Bravo et al.

Summary: This theoretical study applies the findings from electromagnetic research on radar slab absorbers to enhance the broadband dissipation of micro-perforated absorbers in the field of acoustics. A causal-based optimization criterion is proposed to find optimal absorbers that achieve maximum wideband performance and perfect absorption at their Helmholtz resonance frequency. The criterion maximizes the sensitivity of the total reflected intensity with respect to the absorber's constitutive parameters and can be easily implemented using numerical methods. It is shown to be a suitable alternative for single-layer absorber broadband optimization.

Causally-guided acoustic optimization of rigidly-backed micro-perforated partitions: Case studies and experiments

Teresa Bravo et al.

Summary: This study extends the causal-based optimization criterion for a single-layer micro-perforated absorber (MPA) to multiple and parallel MPA systems and general incidence. The results show that the wideband performance of MPAs scales with their overall or effective cavity depths, with a negative effect of the incidence angle. By maximizing the sensitivity of the total reflected intensity with respect to the micro-perforated panel parameters, the optimized design achieves perfect absorption and broad bandwidth efficiency in resonant states. It also provides near-unit absorption in MPA arrays through efficient grouping of cross-coupled resonant states.

How the waveguide acoustic black hole works: A study of possible damping mechanisms

Abbas Mousavi et al.

Summary: The acoustic black hole effect in waveguides was studied using finite element simulations, and the damping mechanisms involved were investigated. The results showed that adding damping material to the end of the waveguide did not significantly contribute to the performance, and local absorption effects on the outer surface of the cylinder were identified as the primary damping source.

Broadband and low frequency sound absorption by Sonic black holes with Micro-perforated boundaries

Zhang Xiaoqi et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a Sonic black hole (SBH) sound absorber inside a circular duct in conjunction with the use of Microperforated panels (MPPs) to achieve broadband and low-frequency sound absorption. Through finite element simulations and experimental confirmation, the device is shown to have superior sound absorption performance and potential advantages over traditional noise control devices.

Wave trapping by acoustic black hole: Simultaneous reduction of sound reflection and transmission

Yongzhen Mi et al.

Summary: Acoustic metamaterials, including the concept of Acoustic Black Hole (ABH), show great potential for trapping and dissipating sound energy. In a duct ABH with continuous cross-sectional reduction and impedance variation, the sound speed can be progressively reduced to trap sound waves within the structure. Research on the simultaneous reduction of sound reflection and transmission is promising and could overcome limitations of traditional noise control devices.

A Metawindow with Optimised Acoustic and Ventilation Performance

Gioia Fusaro et al.

Summary: The study developed an acoustic metamaterial window design that achieved a dual effect of natural ventilation and noise reduction. Through FEM analysis and anechoic chamber testing, the acoustic performance and ventilation potential were optimized, resulting in a balanced noise reduction and ventilation capacity.
