Effectiveness of damping and inertance of two dampers on mitigation of multimode vibrations of stay cables by using the finite difference method

Yuanyuan Wang et al.

Summary: In this paper, the effectiveness of two different types of dampers in reducing rain-wind induced vibration and vortex-induced vibration on cable-stayed bridges with long spans is investigated. The results show that a combination of two dampers can effectively enhance the damping ratios and reduce vibration levels for different modes.

Design Formulas of Electromagnetic Inertial Mass Dampers for Cable Vibration Mitigation

Yamin Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes design formulas for an electromagnetic inertial mass damper (EIMD), based on inerter, for bridge stay cables. The design formulas for the optimal inertance coefficient and damping coefficient of the EIMD are derived to maximize the modal damping ratio for a specific cable vibration mode. The accuracy of the design formulas is validated through numerical simulation and full-scale experimental study, providing simple design formulas for easy use in cable vibration mitigation engineering practice.

High-mode vortex-induced vibration of stay cables: monitoring, cause investigation, and mitigation

Sunjoong Kim et al.

Summary: This case study investigates the cause of high-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) in stay cables of a cable-stayed bridge using long-term field monitoring data. Wind characteristics and dynamic responses of girders and stay cables were analyzed to study two potential vibration sources - interactions with girders and vortex shedding. A novel modal decomposition procedure and damping identification technique were proposed to reveal the relationship between shedding frequencies of stay cables, critical wind velocities, and the damping capacity's effect on modal VIV amplitudes. The effectiveness of Stockbridge dampers in mitigating high-mode cable VIVs was examined through field application and comparison analysis during a typhoon. The unique interaction between stay cable vibrations and the buffeting response of bridge girders was also discussed.

Summary: A novel negative stiffness inerter damper (NSID) is proposed in this study to improve the control performance of stay cables. The NSID utilizes the damping enhancement of negative stiffness and inerter for cable vibration control. The study explores the modal behavior of the cable based on optimum parameters of the NSID and demonstrates the principle and conditions of the NSID for cable vibration control. The NSID performs better than other dampers in mitigating cable vibrations.

Optimum design of viscous inerter damper targeting multi-mode vibration mitigation of stay cables

Hui Gao et al.

Summary: An optimum design procedure based on output feedback control theory is proposed in this study to suppress multi-mode cable vibrations using viscous inerter dampers. The proposed design method effectively minimizes the performance index of the cable-VID system and demonstrates superior control performance compared to traditional viscous dampers. However, the advantage of the VID for higher-order cable modes may diminish as the design cable mode increases.

Summary: This study investigates the high-mode vortex-induced vibration (VIV) characteristics of stay cables in cable-stayed bridges and effective suppression measures through experimental research. The results show that stay-cable VIV can be effectively suppressed by increasing the damping ratio under low damping conditions. Helical fillets are found to have limited effectiveness in suppressing high-mode VIV responses.

Summary: This study conducts a unified analysis of the multimode damping effects of negative stiffness and inerter mechanisms when combined with a viscous damper for cable vibration control. It demonstrates that an ideal NSD evenly improves damping for each cable mode, while using an IVA requires balancing damping effects for multiple cable modes. The tuned inerter damper is found to have the best performance among investigated IVAs.
