A review of the indispensable role of oxygen vacancies for enhanced CO2 methanation activity over CeO2-based catalysts: Uncovering, influencing, and tuning strategies

Ijaz Hussain et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is recognized as a crucial greenhouse gas and key driver of climate change. Methanation, the conversion of CO2 to methane using renewable hydrogen, offers a promising approach to achieve net-zero atmospheric CO2 concentrations. However, the development of effective catalytic systems remains a significant challenge for CO2 methanation. This review examines various characterization techniques for measuring oxygen vacancies (OVs) and discusses the role of OVs in CeO2-based catalysts as well as strategies to increase their numbers. The findings of this study can inspire scientists to improve catalytic CO2 methanation.

Emergy evaluation of positive and negative benefits of agricultural water use based on energy analysis of water cycle

Meiyan Gao et al.

Summary: The current assessment of the positive and negative benefits of agricultural water use fails to consider the overall energy flow, resulting in a lack of comprehensive analysis. This study analyzes the energy conversion relationship in each link of the ecological economic system of agricultural water resources and proposes a quantitive method system for assessing the positive and negative benefits of agricultural water use. The findings indicate that non-point source pollution is the main cause of negative benefits, and implementing policies to limit pollutants in agricultural production can improve water efficiency and reduce negative impacts.

Synergetic effect of interface and surface on photocatalytic performance of TiO2@ hollow CeO2 core-shell nanostructures

Summary: The photocatalytic performance of new TiO2/CeO2 composites was enhanced compared to bare TiO2 and CeO2 nanoparticles. Tuning the TiO2 shell deposition extended the absorption range to visible light and prolonged the lifetime of photo-induced electron-hole pairs, resulting in a significant enhancement in the degradation rate of methylene blue under both UV and visible light conditions. The strong interface interaction and modification of Ce3+ and Ti3+ content near the interface in the core-shell structure contribute to the improved photocatalytic efficiency.
