Sleep problems among adolescents within child and adolescent mental health services. An epidemiological study with registry linkage

Mari Hysing et al.

Summary: Insufficient knowledge about sleep among adolescents within child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in comparison to the general population. Sleep problems, especially insomnia, are highly prevalent among adolescents diagnosed with mental health disorders, such as depression and ADHD. This highlights the need for treating sleep problems in CAMHS and using transdiagnostic treatment approaches.

Sleep problems and complexity of mental health needs in adolescent psychiatric inpatients

Addo Boafo et al.

Summary: Sleep problems are closely related to mental health needs in adolescent inpatients, including eating disturbances, trauma adjustment, and school attendance. The likelihood of sleep problems increases as complexity scores rise, plateauing at six needs. Adolescents with sleep issues are more likely to have medication changes during hospitalization and to be discharged with antipsychotic medication. These findings indicate that sleep difficulties in adolescent inpatients may be associated with more complex mental health needs.
