Compact capillary high performance liquid chromatography system for pharmaceutical on-line reaction monitoring

Summary: Due to their size, conventional high performance liquid chromatographs (HPLCs) are difficult to place close to a reaction vessel within a pharmaceutical manufacturing or development site. However, a compact and modular separation system using capillary HPLC has been developed to enable co-location of an HPLC with a small-scale reactor for reaction monitoring. The compact system showed equivalent quantitative performance to an Agilent 1290 Infinity II HPLC system.

The cell integrates optical fibers for easy connection with the light source and detector and exhibits low baseline noise and high optical path efficiency.

Robust off-grid analyser for autonomous remote in-situ monitoring of nitrate and nitrite in water

Summary: An off-grid, IoT-connected ion chromatography analyser was developed for real-time automated measurement of nitrate and nitrite levels in remote surface water. The system used KOH eluent with an AG15 guard column and a selective 235 nm UV-LED detector. A self-cleaning 3D printed Sediment Trap filtered the sample, reducing suspended solids and turbidity. Tests showed robust performance in varying environmental conditions, and two analysers deployed in West Cork successfully detected transient pollution events, improving water-quality management.

Portable electrochemical sensing methodologies for on-site detection of pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables

Summary: Due to over application of synthetic pesticides, pesticide residues pose an increasing threat to ecosystems and human health. Electrochemical sensor and biosensor platforms have emerged as powerful analytical methods for detecting pesticide residues, offering advantages such as synergistic aspects, systematic fabrication procedure, ease of detection, sensitivity, and selectivity. Additionally, portable electrochemical devices have been developed for on-site detection of pesticide residues.

Ion chromatograph with three-dimensional printed absorbance detector for indirect ultraviolet absorbance detection of phosphate in effluent and natural waters

Summary: An ion chromatography system with a low-cost three-dimensional printed absorbance detector was developed for portable phosphate analysis of environmental and industrial waters. The system achieved accurate results for phosphate analysis in environmental and wastewater samples, with a linear calibration range of 0.5 to 30 mg/L PO43-. The use of stereolithography three-dimensional printing for fabrication of the optical detection cell provided a cost-effective and efficient solution for analysis.

On-Demand Mass Spectrometry Analysis by Miniature Mass Spectrometer

Summary: A novel on-demand MS analysis method was developed based on discontinuous ion injection-induced ESI on a miniature MS system, enabling highly efficient ionization under low voltages. This method was found to be softer for ionization of proteins and allowed single-cell analysis with reduced sample consumption.
