The assessment of a fast computational method in predicting the unsteady loads of vertical axis wind turbines undergoing floating motion

Nidiana Rosado Hau et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the use of Turbines Foam, a fast tool consisting of the actuator line method embedded in OpenFoam, to assess the unsteady aerodynamics of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) in Floating-Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) applications. The numerical method is verified by comparing with experimental data and results from CFD computations from the literature. The study shows that the Turbines Foam accurately captures the complex surge motion and can be used to understand the effects of geometrical parameters on the performance and wake development of VAWTs in floating-offshore environments.

Life cycle assessment of floating offshore wind farms: An evaluation of operation and maintenance

Anna Garcia-Teruel et al.

Summary: The study quantifies the environmental impact of floating offshore wind farms by using a Life Cycle Assessment, finding that different O&M philosophies and vessel choices can result in variations in the Global Warming Potential values. An environmental impact perspective provides key insights for the choice of different designs, operation strategies, and asset management.

Estimation of blade loads for a variable pitch Vertical Axis Wind Turbine with strain gage measurements

Bruce LeBlanc et al.

Summary: The blade pitch angle of a Vertical Axis Wind Turbine significantly affects its aerodynamic loading and performance. Experimental measurements with fixed pitch offsets in a wind tunnel provide insights into the sensitivity of turbine loading to blade pitch angle. Changes in the blade pitch alter the normal loading of the rotor, causing variations in rotor thrust. The data obtained also reveals the aerodynamic phenomena associated with VAWTs, including dynamic stall and blade vortex interaction.

Passive control of dynamic stall in a H-Darrieus Vertical Axis Wind Turbine using blade leading-edge protuberances

Afonso N. C. Goncalves et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the effectiveness of leading-edge protuberances in controlling the stall behavior of Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs). The results show significant performance gains and improved self-starting behavior with the use of leading-edge protuberances.

Structural analysis of an offshore vertical axis wind turbine composite blade experiencing an extreme wind load

Brian Hand et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the structural analysis of a VAWT blade structure subject to a critical load case, demonstrating that the utilization of a composite blade topology can effectively resist the induced flapwise loading and keep material strains within allowable limits. The analytical approach is shown to be a quick and accurate technique for computing composite blade strain distribution compared to FE model results.

Modal properties of a vertical axis wind turbine in operating and parked conditions

Luisa C. Pagnini et al.

Summary: Modal frequencies and damping coefficients are crucial for wind excited structures, especially for vertical axis wind turbines. Experimental studies are lacking in damping ratio measurements for this type of turbine in operating conditions. This paper investigates the natural frequencies and modal damping coefficients of a vertical axis wind turbine under different wind and operating conditions through a long-term monitoring campaign.
