Investigation of energy absorption capacity of 3D filament wound composite tubes: experimental evaluation, numerical simulation, and acoustic emission monitoring

Sajad Alimirzaei et al.

Summary: By analyzing the failure mechanisms, this study investigates the crashworthiness characteristics of FW composite tubes under two different modes of damage. The acoustic emission technique and numerical method are used, and the AE signals are classified using hierarchical and wavelet transform methods. A microstructural finite element model is developed based on the realistic and three-dimensional geometrical architecture, and deformation patterns and the impact on crashworthiness characteristics are assessed. The results show that fiber breakage and fiber/matrix debonding play a significant role in the damage. Changing the modes from progressive damage to catastrophic failure increases the percentage of matrix cracking and decreases fiber/matrix separation.

Investigation of Mechanical Properties and Failure Behavior of CFRP Filament-Wound Composites Using an Acoustic Emission-Based Methodology and Numerical Simulation

Sajad Alimirzaei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties and failure analyses of filament-wound carbon/epoxy composite samples under three-point bending using the acoustic emission technique. Composite plates and structures were fabricated and tested, and the damage mechanisms were identified by analyzing the recorded acoustic emission signals during loading. The experimental results showed a good correlation between the received acoustic emission signals and the mechanical behavior of the composite samples, indicating three distinct regions of acoustic response to loading.

Damage mechanism characterization of ±35° and ±55° FW composite tubes using acoustic emission method

Sajad Alimirzaei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical properties of filament wound composite tubes at +/-35 degrees and +/-55 degrees under axial compression loading using acoustic emission technique. The analysis shows that increasing the weaving angle of fibers leads to decreased separation of fibers from the matrix and increased percentage of matrix crushing and fiber failure.

Characterization of The Damage Mechanism of Glass/Epoxy Composite Tubes Under Quasi-Static Axial Loading Using Acoustic Emission Monitoring

Sajad Alimirzaei et al.

Summary: The crashworthiness characteristics of glass fiber composite tubes were studied, and the damage mechanisms were investigated using acoustic emission technique and wavelet packet transform. The results showed that longitudinal cracks were the main failure mechanism, while matrix cracking, debonding, and fiber breakage were secondary damages. A low content of debonding attributed to the local buckling failure mode.

Design, modeling, optimization, manufacturing and testing of variable-angle filament-wound cylinders

Jose Humberto S. Almeida et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the potential of manufacturing variable-angle composite cylinders using filament winding. The approach allows different filament angles along the axial direction by dividing the cylinder into regions of constant angle. The VAFW design shows significantly higher buckling strength, stiffness, and absorbed energy compared to the constant-angle configuration.

Summary: The acoustic emission method was used to monitor the damage mechanisms in carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer composite tubes during the three-point bending test. A two-step technique was applied to analyze the data, leading to the identification of failure mechanisms such as matrix cracking, fiber break, decohesion, and debonding. This study also includes a comprehensive parametric acoustic emission signal analysis of the individual clusters, as well as comparisons with existing research papers.

Prediction of drilled hole quality in bidirectional woven carbon fiber reinforced plastic using wavelet packets of force-torque signals

Tarakeswar Barik et al.

Summary: This study addressed the parametric investigation on drilling capability of TiAlN- and TiN-coated drills over the uncoated one for carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs). The results showed that coated drills generated more uniform torque and improved drilled hole quality, while feed rate had a more predominant effect on delamination compared to spindle speed, especially when using coated tools.
