Modification of activated carbon from agricultural waste lotus leaf and its adsorption mechanism of beryllium

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, lotus leaf was used to prepare Al-activated carbon (Al-AC) to remove beryllium from industrial wastewater. The Al-AC showed a high theoretical maximum adsorption capacity and improved low adsorption capacity issue. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption reaction of Al-AC was endothermic. The characterization analysis demonstrated a significant increase in the specific surface area of the modified AC. This study provides a new approach to preparing and modifying AC and a new method for removing beryllium from industrial wastewater.

Adsorptive removal of beryllium by Fe-modified activated carbon prepared from lotus leaf

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, Fe-activated carbon was prepared from lotus leaf as raw material and its adsorption performance was tested. The results showed that the modified activated carbon had better adsorption effect under neutral conditions and exhibited improved selectivity. Characterization analysis revealed that the modified activated carbon had increased pore volume, specific surface area, and zero charges, while the types of functional groups were reduced. The iron reacted with functional groups, providing ion exchange sites for the adsorption of beryllium. The adsorption process was found to be spontaneous and endothermic chemical adsorption.

Preparation of porous calcium carbonate biochar and its beryllium adsorption performance

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study designed porous calcium carbonate biochar (CC-LBC) for wastewater treatment in beryllium production, and investigated the adsorption effect of CC-LBC on Be(II) at different concentrations. Results showed that CC-LBC exhibited a high adsorption capacity for Be(II) due to its loose and porous structure. Moreover, CC-LBC showed a better selective adsorption performance for beryllium in the binary system.

Effect of mechanical-chemical modification on adsorption of beryllium by calcite

Xu Zhao et al.

Summary: In this paper, the use of CaCO3 to treat beryllium-containing wastewater was proposed. The results showed that CaCO3 had a maximum adsorption capacity of 45 mg/g for beryllium. The optimum treatment conditions were pH 7 and an adsorbent amount of 1 g/L, with a removal rate of 99%. The concentration of beryllium in the treated solution was less than 5 μg/L, meeting international emission standards. The research indicated that CaCO3 could be considered as a potential adsorbent for removing beryllium from industrial wastewater.

Evaluation of Poultry Manure: Combination of Phosphorus Recovery and Activated Carbon Production

Nurdan Sevde Topcu et al.

Summary: Intensive poultry production generates a large amount of waste, causing environmental concerns. This study explores the potential use of poultry manure as a carbon source for solid fuels and activated carbon, as well as a phosphorus source. The results indicate that biochar and hydrochar production may not be effective in upgrading poultry manure into energy-dense solid fuel. However, phosphorus recovery through acid leaching-alkali precipitation shows promising results. The activated carbon produced through chemical activation also exhibits comparable characteristics to biomass-derived activated carbon.

Pilot-scale combined adsorption columns using activated carbon and zeolite for hazardous trace elements removal from wastewater of entrained-flow coal gasification

Chaoran Wan et al.

Summary: The study proposes an adsorption method combining granular activated carbon (GAC) and zeolite as adsorbents for the removal of hazardous trace elements (HTEs) released during gasification, with promising results from pilot-scale experiments. Results showed that GAC derived from low rank bituminous coal has good adsorption performance for mercury, arsenic, and beryllium. Kinetics studies revealed that experimental data fit Pseudo-second order, and zeolite's ion exchange capacity greatly impacts its adsorption performance.

Summary: Ga2S3 and sulfur co-modified biochar composites (Ga/S-BC) were prepared via high-temperature sulfurization to enhance the adsorption of ciprofloxacin. Among the composites, 3-Ga/S-BC with 7.40% Ga content and a surface area of 681.67 m(2) g(-1) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity of 330.21 mg g(-1. The adsorption process was described by Langmuir isotherm and followed a second-order model, showing physisorption and spontaneous behavior.
