Improving the performance of primary aluminum-air batteries through suppressing water activity by hydrogen bond-rich glycerol solvent additive

Thi Huong Pham et al.

Summary: In this study, glycerol was used as a low-cost and eco-friendly electrolyte additive in primary aluminum-air battery. Glycerol molecules formed hydrogen bonds with water molecules to reconstruct the hydrogen bond network in the electrolyte, resulting in a reduction in water activity. This expansion of the hydrogen evolution potential of the electrolyte suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction and self-corrosion of aluminum anodes, leading to significantly increased capacity density and energy density of the Al-air battery. With a glycerol content of 20% in 4 M NaOH electrolyte, the capacity density of the Al-air battery reached 2564 mAh g -1, which was 2.3 times higher than in the absence of glycerol.

Influence of an imidazole-based ionic liquid as electrolyte additive on the performance of alkaline Al-air battery

Qiao Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an imidazole-based ionic liquid (HMIC) was explored as a corrosion inhibitor for Al-5052 alloy in 4 M NaOH electrolyte. The electrochemical tests showed that the inhibition efficiency reached 58.2% at a concentration of 7 mM HMIC, and the anode utilization increased to 82.9%. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and molecular dynamics simulation revealed that HMIC could adsorb on the surface of Al-5052 to form a protective barrier, preventing self-corrosion of the Al anode. Additionally, the addition of HMIC significantly improved the discharge performance of the Al-air battery, achieving a nominal specific capacity of 2469 mAh g(-1) and energy density of 3313 Wh kg(-1).

Synergistic Effect of Vanadate and Nanoclay Hybrid Inhibitor on the Self-Corrosion and Discharge Activity of Al Anode in Alkaline Aluminum-Air Batteries

R. K. Harchegani et al.

Summary: This work addresses the issues of Al anode in aqueous Al-air batteries by applying an innovative design strategy with vanadate and nanoclay additives. The results showed that adding vanadate, nanoclay, and a hybrid combination of both effectively reduced Al anode corrosion, with the hybrid additive providing the highest inhibition efficiency of 72.6%. The anodic efficiency and capacity density of the anode reached 81.4% and 2426 mAh.g(-1) using the hybrid inhibitor. Electrochemical and microscopical analysis indicated that the corrosion inhibition of the additives was attributed to the formation of a protective film on the Al anode surface. Therefore, this technique has the potential to increase the lifespan of Al-air batteries by enhancing the inhibition efficiency of the Al anode.
