Preparation, characterization, and evaluation of tamarind seed polysaccharide-carboxymethylcellulose buccal films loaded with soybean peptides-chitosan nanoparticles

Suping Ji et al.

Summary: A new buccal film composed of tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) was created for delivering soybean peptides through the mucosa. Soybean peptides-chitosan nanoparticles (SP-CS) were incorporated into the TSP-CMC film to enhance the release of soybean peptides in the mouth. The addition of SP-CS improved the flexibility of the film and disrupted hydrogen bonding between the film matrices, resulting in a loose internal structure and increased swelling ability. The release test indicated that the initial burst release of soybean peptides was suppressed when the concentration of SP-CS exceeded 1%, but low levels of SP-CS (1%-3%) increased the cumulative release compared to the film without SP-CS. These findings suggest that TSP-CMC films containing SP-CS have potential for efficient soybean peptide delivery.

N-doped activated carbon for high-efficiency ofloxacin adsorption

Song He et al.

Summary: This study prepared high specific surface area activated carbon from rice husk for the removal of ofloxacin from medical wastewater. The activated carbon exhibited a large surface area, pore volume, and good thermal stability. Batch experiments revealed the influence of pH, initial concentration, temperature, and coexisting ions on the ofloxacin adsorption. Langmuir and general-order kinetic models were used to describe the adsorption equilibrium data and process, respectively. Thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption process was autogenous and endothermic. Treatment of synthetic medical wastewater with activated carbon achieved a high removal rate. The material's superior adsorption properties, ease of preparation and regeneration, make it potentially effective for the removal of ofloxacin from real medical wastewater.

Clay-Based Nanocomposite Hydrogels for Biomedical Applications: A Review

Cezar Tipa et al.

Summary: In recent decades, there has been a significant interest in the development of new materials, particularly three-dimensional scaffolds, that can meet the diverse needs of the expanding biomedical field. Hydrogels, due to their biocompatibility and ability to mimic the extracellular matrix, have been extensively studied in biomedical applications. However, their poor mechanical integrity and limited cell interaction have limited their broad applicability. To overcome these limitations, researchers have focused on incorporating nanoparticles into polymeric gels to form nanocomposites with tailored functionality and improved properties. This review specifically emphasizes the unique contributions of clay nanoparticles in clay-based nanocomposite hydrogels and their biomedical applications.
