Utilization of Textile Wastewater as A Substrate for Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) and Enhanced Production by Mutant Enterobacter

Thanaphorn Rakkan et al.

Summary: This study successfully enhanced the ability of Enterobacter strain TS3 to produce polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) using textile wastewater (TW) through a UV-light radiation-based mutagenesis system. The mutant strain showed significantly increased PHA production and improved decolorization efficiency of TW under optimal conditions.

Core-Shell Magnetoactive PHB/Gelatin/Magnetite Composite Electrospun Scaffolds for Biomedical Applications

Artyom S. Pryadko et al.

Summary: Novel hybrid magnetoactive composite scaffolds based on poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), gelatin, and magnetite (Fe3O4) were fabricated by electrospinning. The hybrid scaffolds exhibited both core-shell and ribbon-shaped structure, with submicron-sized Fe3O4 particles observed on the surface layers. The presence of gelatin was revealed through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Incubation in saline decreased the amount of gelatin on the surface. The melting temperature and crystallinity of the scaffolds decreased with the addition of gelatin. The composite scaffolds were non-toxic and showed promising magnetization for biomedical applications.

Production and characterization of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) BY Burkholderia cepacia BPT1213 using waste glycerol as carbon source

Y. B. Drusilla Wendy et al.

Summary: This study focused on using waste glycerol as a carbon source to produce PHB using Burkholderia cepacia BPT1213. The results showed that increasing waste glycerol content led to a decrease in cell dry weight and PHB content. B. cepacia BPT1213 was able to synthesize a significant amount of PHB when supplemented with 2% waste glycerol. Structural analysis of the extracted PHB was performed using NMR and FTIR spectroscopy.

Cellulose biosynthesis using simple sugars available in residual cacao mucilage exudate

Olga L. Saavedra-Sanabria et al.

Summary: Cacao mucilage exudate (CME) can be used to produce bacterial cellulose (BC), but high sugar content, low pH, and limited nitrogen sources in CME can hinder G. xylinus growth affecting cellulose yields. By diluting CME and adding a nitrogen source, BC production significantly increased. Scaling up BC production from 30 mL to 15 L under lab-scale conditions showed no significant changes in yields and production rates, suggesting industrial possibilities are feasible.

Volatile Fatty Acids as Carbon Sources for Polyhydroxyalkanoates Production

Karolina Szacherska et al.

Summary: Waste from synthetic materials poses a serious threat to the environment due to fossil resource depletion and legal restrictions on plastic waste management. Research on biopolymers as an ecological alternative to petrochemical polymers, specifically Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), is gaining attention. Production of PHAs using volatile fatty acids (VFAs) as carbon sources from organic waste through anaerobic digestion is being explored to reduce costs and environmental impact, with microbial producer selection and VFAs composition playing crucial roles in the synthesis process.
