Comparative differences in photosynthetic characteristics, ion balance, and nitrogen metabolism between young and old wild soybean leaves under nitrogen deficiency

Shujuan Gao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the photosynthetic characteristics, ion balance, and nitrogen metabolism of wild soybean under different intensities of nitrogen deficiency. The results showed that nitrogen deficiency inhibited growth and total nitrogen content, but had a smaller effect on a specific genotype of wild soybean. The genotype with higher nitrogen deficiency tolerance showed longer root length under high intensity of nitrogen deficiency. The young leaves of this genotype maintained stable photosynthetic rate and pigment content, while the old leaves transported Mg2+ and K+ to the young leaves. The activities of certain enzymes involved in nitrogen metabolism were also increased in the old and young leaves of the tolerant genotype. This study provides insights into the physiological mechanisms of wild soybean seedlings in resisting low nitrogen stress and contributes to the protection and utilization of wild soybean resources.
