Ferrous iron uptake via IRT1/ZIP evolved at least twice in green plants

Wenderson Felipe Costa Rodrigues et al.

Summary: Iron (Fe) is essential for all organisms and is involved in various biochemical processes. Most plants uptake soluble iron (Fe2+) while it is generally found in the form of poorly soluble ferric iron (Fe3+). This study investigated the evolution of IRON-REGULATED TRANSPORTER 1/ZIP proteins in land plants and chlorophyte green algae. The results suggest that Fe2+ uptake through ZIP proteins evolved independently at least twice during green plant evolution.

Role of iron in gene expression and in the modulation of copper uptake in a freshwater alga: Insights on Cu and Fe assimilation pathways

Emeric Kochoni et al.

Summary: Metal uptake and toxicity are influenced by its aqueous speciation and competitive ions, as well as internal biological feedback mechanisms. This study found that the uptake rate of Cu2+ significantly increased in algal cells acclimated to a low Fe3+ environment, up to 4.7 times higher compared to non-acclimated cells. The overexpression of certain genes suggests the activation of a high affinity Fe3+ assimilation system, which may explain the increase in Cu2+ uptake rate in acclimatized algae.

The economics of organellar gene loss and endosymbiotic gene transfer

Steven Kelly

Summary: The difference in per-cell copy number of organellar and nuclear genomes provides an energetic incentive for cells to either delete organellar genes or transfer them to the nuclear genome. The majority of transferred organellar genes show that the energy saved by nuclear transfer exceeds the costs incurred from importing the protein into the organelle. The net energy saved by endosymbiotic gene transfer can constitute a significant proportion of total cellular energy budgets, providing a selectable advantage to the cell.
