p-Methoxycinnamic acid disturbs cellular respiration and increases the lignification of Euphorbia heterophylla roots

Flavia Carolina Moreira-Vilar et al.

Summary: Herbicide-resistant plants have evolved rapidly due to the repeated use of active ingredients with limited mechanisms of action. This study evaluated the effects of p-methoxycinnamic acid on the growth, respiration, and lignification of the wild poinsettia weed. The results showed that p-methoxycinnamic acid inhibited root growth and cell viability, disrupted cellular respiration, and increased oxidative stress and lignin synthesis. These findings suggest that p-methoxycinnamic acid has phytotoxic potential and may be explored as a potential herbicide.

Reactive Oxygen Species in Plants: From Source to Sink

Sheikh Mansoor et al.

Summary: Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are highly reactive and dangerous by-products that can cause oxidative cell death, but they also play a beneficial role in regulating biological processes. ROS are generated in various cell compartments of plants and require the action of antioxidants to scavenge them. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fate of ROS in plants, their role in stress response, and their interaction with other signaling molecules/pathways.

Where are the new herbicides?

Ren-Yu Qu et al.

Summary: Herbicide resistance is a major issue in global crop production, prompting the need for new herbicides with novel modes of action. This study focuses on the rational design of new herbicides based on target protein characteristics and inhibitor structures, as well as a computational method for evaluating target mutation-induced resistance. The findings aim to enhance the utilization of known targets and drive the discovery of herbicides with new targets.

Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Induce Root Growth Inhibition in Soybean Due to Physical Damages

Gabriele Sauthier Romano de Melo et al.

Summary: The study shows that TiO2 NPs do not affect soybean seed germination, but have deleterious effects on roots, including reduced cell viability, decreased root hair number, striated appearance of root apexes, and decreased root weights. Contrary to other studies, plant exposure to TiO2 NPs actually reduces total ROS levels and lipid peroxidation, possibly due to increased superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity.

The Significance of Reactive Oxygen Species and Antioxidant Defense System in Plants: A Concise Overview

Jelena Dumanovic et al.

Summary: In plants, there is a complex antioxidative system (AOS) operating to counteract reactive oxygen species (ROS) and maintain homeostasis within the cell. Plants have excellent antioxidative defense systems, and their antioxidant compounds have been utilized in various fields such as anti-aging formulations, food fortification, and designing therapies for diseases with oxidative stress.

Recent Developments in Enzymatic Antioxidant Defence Mechanism in Plants with Special Reference to Abiotic Stress

Vishnu D. Rajput et al.

Summary: Plants rely on a complex grid of antioxidant enzymes to cope with stress conditions, with SOD, CAT, POX, and GPX playing crucial roles in minimizing reactive oxygen species. The interplay of these enzymes is essential for plant health and development, and their manipulation can be useful in developing stress-tolerant transgenic plants.
