Designing sequence-defined peptoids for fibrillar self-assembly and silicification

Wenchao Yang et al.

Summary: In the biological environment, mineral crystals controlled by biomacromolecules exhibit intricate structures and superior mechanical properties. Through the design of peptoids with strong binding to silica, self-assembled peptoid fibers can mimic the biocatalytic and templating functions of silicatein filaments, resulting in the formation of silica fibers. The presence of amino groups is crucial for nucleation of silica on self-assembled peptoid nanofibers. The formation of silica shell on peptoid fibers greatly enhances the mechanical property of hydrogel materials.

Programming Amphiphilic Peptoid Oligomers for Hierarchical Assembly and Inorganic Crystallization

Bin Cai et al.

Summary: This article discusses the applications of biomimetic peptoids in two aspects: (1) utilizing designed amphiphilic peptoid sequences for controlled self-assembly into hierarchically structured nanomaterials, and (2) developing biomimetic approaches for controlled synthesis of inorganic materials inspired by protein- and peptide-controlled formation of hierarchical inorganic nanostructures in nature.
