Two triplet emitting states in one emitter: Near-infrared dual-phosphorescent Au20 nanocluster

Wei -Dan Si et al.

Summary: In this study, an all-alkynyl-protected gold nanocluster, Au20, with distinguished photophysical properties including near-infrared dual-emission (DE) at 820 and 940 nm and high photo-luminescent quantum yield, was synthesized. Through systematic spectroscopic and theoretical studies, two triplet charge transfer states, ligand-to-kernel and kernel-based CT states, were identified as the origins of DE. The NIR DE also exhibited highly independent and sensitive responses to surrounding environments. This work provides insights into the DE mechanism and promotes the development of NIR DE materials.

Atomically Precise Au42 Nanorods with Longitudinal Excitons for an Intense Photothermal Effect

Yingwei Li et al.

Summary: This study reports a metal-precise rod-shaped Au42(SCH2Ph)32 with a high aspect ratio of the hexagonal-close-packed Au20 kernel, which exhibits intense longitudinal absorption and effective photothermal conversion at low concentrations. The findings demonstrate that Au42 nanorods inherit the longitudinal excitation similar to metallic-state nanorods. This work highlights the potential applications of Au42 nanorods in photothermal converters, biomedical therapy, photoacoustic imaging, and photocatalysis.

Near-Infrared Dual Emission from the Au42(SR)32 Nanocluster and Tailoring of Intersystem Crossing

Lianshun Luo et al.

Summary: The synthesis and photoluminescence of the Au42(PET)32 nanocluster are presented in this work. The nanocluster exhibits dual emission, with fluorescence and phosphorescence at different wavelengths. The emission quantum yield is 11.9% in liquid state and the fluorescence is suppressed while the phosphorescence is enhanced in solid state, which can be explained by interaction-induced transition.

Source of Bright Near-Infrared Luminescence in Gold Nanoclusters

Qi Li et al.

Summary: Gold nanoclusters with near-infrared photoluminescence show potential for sensing and imaging in biomedical applications. The study focuses on two types of gold nanoclusters, Au-21(S-Adm)(15) and Au38S2(S-Adm)(20), and explores the mechanisms behind their improved quantum yields, large Stokes shifts, and long photoluminescence lifetimes. Results suggest that the surface lock rings play a key role in achieving high quantum yields in gold nanoclusters.

Theoretical Characterizations of TADF Materials: Roles of ΔG and the Singlet-Triplet Excited States Interconversion

Lu Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the key factors influencing the thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) phenomenon in 11 D-A systems, and finds that the activation energy ΔG is a better molecular descriptor for characterizing TADF performance compared to the energy gap ΔE-ST, providing new insights for the molecular design of high-performance TADF materials.

Origins of Visible and Near-Infrared Emissions in [Au25(SR)18]- Nanoclusters

Meng Zhou et al.

Summary: A model that can explain the emission bands of Au-25 nanoclusters was proposed based on time-resolved emission and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy analyses. The visible and near-infrared emissions were found to arise from the core-shell charge transfer state and the Au-13 core state, respectively. This insight will aid in understanding how the excited state deactivates and in further engineering the photoluminescence of metal nanoclusters.

Bright NIR-II Photoluminescence in Rod-Shaped Icosahedral Gold Nanoclusters

Qi Li et al.

Summary: This study reports rod-shaped icosahedral nanoclusters with bright NIR-II PL, quantum yields up to approximately 8%, and a peak emission wavelength of 1520 nm. The central Au atom in the nanoclusters is found to enhance overall PL efficiency and make NIR-II emission brighter. A framework is developed to analyze underlying transitions in metal nanoclusters based on experimentally defined absorption coefficients.

Deciphering the dual emission in the photoluminescence of Au14Cd(SR)12: A theoretical study using TDDFT and TDDFT plus TB

Shana Havenridge et al.

Summary: Determining excited state processes for small nanoclusters, specifically gold, helps in fine-tuning luminescent materials and optical devices. In this study, a unique mechanism proposing that dual emission in Au14Cd(S-Adm)(12) originates from two minima on the first excited state surface is presented, which stems from geometrical changes in the bi-tetrahedron core during the emission process.
