Kabeer Jasuja et al.

Summary: Transition-metal diborides are ceramic materials that possess exceptional properties such as high strength, hardness, and melting points. Researchers have recently shown interest in nanoscaling these materials into 2D nanostructures through top-down exfoliation methods, such as liquid-phase exfoliation and mechanical exfoliation. This review summarizes the research progress and findings in this field, discusses the applications of nanoscaled metal borides, and provides insights into future directions.

Hydrogen Storage in Partially Exfoliated Magnesium Diboride Multilayers

Harini Gunda et al.

Summary: Metal boride nanostructures have great potential for hydrogen storage applications. However, their synthesis is challenging due to high surface energy, strong bonding, and difficult surface termination. Mechanochemical exfoliation of magnesium diboride in zirconia produces ultrathin MgB2 nanosheets with high yield. High-pressure hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of these nanosheets reveal a hydrogen capacity 50 times larger than bulk MgB2. The enhancement is attributed to defective sites created by ball-milling and incomplete Mg surface coverage. The exfoliation and creation of ultrathin layers offer a promising direction for high-capacity hydrogen storage.

Nitrogen adsorption via charge transfer on vacancies created during surfactant assisted exfoliation of TiB2

Anshul Rasyotra et al.

Summary: Titanium diboride (TiB2) is a layered ceramic material with a promising structure for utilizing the rich chemistry of titanium and boron. Recent efforts have focused on exfoliating TiB2 into ultrathin nanosheets, which exhibit crystalline nature and vacancies that facilitate chemisorption. Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies show that nanosheets with more vacancies have higher adsorption capacity for N-2 compared to nanosheets with fewer vacancies and bulk TiB2.

B4C-TiB2 composites fabricated by hot pressing TiC-B mixtures: The effect of B excess

Jun Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of boron excess on the phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties of B4C-TiB2 composites fabricated by reactive hot pressing TiC-B powder mixtures. The results show that increasing the boron content improves the hardness and fracture toughness of BxC-TiB2 (x > 4) composites while decreasing their flexural strength.

Titanium diboride (TiB2) derived nanosheets enhance the CO2 capturing ability of Calcium Oxide (CaO)

Vruddhi Jani et al.

Summary: In this study, TiB2 nanosheets were exfoliated and added to CaO material, and it was found that adding just 1% of nanosheets can enhance the capturing capacity of CaO up to 25% and reduce the sintering of CaO. Minimally functionalized nanosheets derived from TiB2 were used to investigate the effect of the density of functional groups on the CO2 capturing ability of CaO, and preliminary insights on the reaction mechanism and rate parameters of CO2 adsorption on CaO were obtained.
