Influence of low-temperature electrolyser design on economic and environmental potential of CO and HCOOH production: A techno-economic assessment

B. Pribyl-Kranewitter et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electrochemical conversion of excess CO2 into valuable chemicals for combating climate change and providing sustainable raw materials for the chemical industry. Analysis of different cell architectures showed that HCOOH production has positive economic outcomes, with CO producing systems showing a greater performance improvement in the optimistic scenario. Additionally, the environmental assessment indicated that CO production systems have the potential to act as a more effective carbon sink.

Potentiometric Rotating Ring Disk Electrode Study of Interfacial pH during CO2 Reduction and H2 Generation in Neutral and Weakly Acidic Media

Brian M. Tackett et al.

Summary: In this study, a versatile IrOx pH-sensing thin film is fabricated on a rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) to measure the pH value during the CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution reaction. The measurements and model effectively capture the drastic pH changes and provide a useful platform for further exploration of electrode kinetics influenced by reaction-induced pH change.

Expanding the Range: AuCu Metal Aerogels from H2O and EtOH

Maximilian Georgi et al.

Summary: Metal aerogels have emerged as excellent electrocatalysts for renewable energy cycles. This study investigates the influence of solvent on the gelation time, crystallinity, morphology, and porosity of metal gels. It was found that using ethanol as a solvent significantly reduces gelation time and suppresses Cu oxidation, enabling the synthesis of pure Cu aerogels.

Interplay between Surface-Adsorbed CO and Bulk Pd Hydride under CO2-Electroreduction Conditions

Justus S. Diercks et al.

Summary: Palladium is an electrocatalyst that can selectively generate carbon monoxide or formate at high and low overpotentials, respectively. Previous studies have been inconclusive about palladium's ability to form a hydride phase and its effect on CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) selectivity. This study used electrochemical measurements and in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy to reveal the strong influence of adsorbed CO on the formation rate of Pd-hydride, and confirmed the complete formation of beta-phase PdHx at all applied potentials under CO2RR conditions.

CO2 Electroreduction on Unsupported PdPt Aerogels: Effects of Alloying and Surface Composition on Product Selectivity

Justus S. Diercks et al.

Summary: Palladium is a promising catalyst for the electrochemical CO2-reduction reaction (CO2RR) due to its unique ability to reduce carbon dioxide into CO or formate at high overpotentials. This research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of unsupported bimetallic PdPt and pure Pt or Pd aerogels. The results show that the Pt surface atoms have high activity toward hydrogen evolution, leading to a preference for this reaction over CO2 reduction in all PdPt alloys. However, the pure Pd aerogel exhibits increased selectivity toward CO due to the suppression of hydrogen evolution caused by its unsupported nature.

Electrochemical Surface Area Quantification, CO2 Reduction Performance, and Stability Studies of Unsupported Three-Dimensional Au Aerogels versus Carbon-Supported Au Nanoparticles

Piyush Chauhan et al.

Summary: Efficiently scaling up CO2-reduction technologies is crucial for intermittent energy storage and closing the carbon cycle. Using novel electrocatalysts like unsupported metal aerogels, which have a highly porous nanostructure, can facilitate selective production of value-added CO2-reduction products and minimize undesirable side reactions like H2 evolution.

Efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction to CO on gold gas diffusion electrodes in acidic media

Mariana C. O. Monteiro et al.

Summary: Large scale CO2 electrolysis to produce CO has traditionally been done in neutral and alkaline media, but recent research shows that it can also be achieved in acidic media with higher efficiency. Operating at current densities up to 200 mA cm(-2), CO faradaic efficiencies between 80-90% were obtained in sulfate electrolyte, representing a step towards the application of acidic electrolyzers for CO2 electroreduction.
