Strain in Catalysis: Rationalizing Material, Adsorbate, and Site Susceptibilities to Biaxial Lattice Strain

Cheng Zeng et al.

Summary: In this work, the authors use electronic structure calculations to systematically understand the binding energy susceptibilities of different adsorbates, materials, and surface sites to strain. They find several general trends, including the material susceptibility order, the relationship between coordination number and strain susceptibility, and the influence of adsorbate valency and composition. The resulting changes in binding energy do not follow the published slopes of linear scaling relations, but instead scale more closely with coordination number. The authors also use an eigenforce model to rationalize the strain trends.

Highly Active and Stable Large Mo-Doped Pt-Ni Octahedral Catalysts for ORR: Synthesis, Post-treatments, and Electrochemical Performance and Stability

Shlomi Polani et al.

Summary: In the past decade, advances in colloidal syntheses have allowed for better control over the morphology and surface composition of octahedral-shaped Pt-Ni alloy nanocatalysts, resulting in higher catalytic activity. However, synthetic methods for larger octahedral Pt-Ni alloy nanoparticles have been challenging to develop. In this study, the researchers successfully manipulated solvothermal synthesis reaction kinetics to tune the size of the resulting nanocatalysts. The study also provides a deeper understanding of the enhanced stability of a new class of Mo-doped Pt-Ni octahedral catalysts for the cathode of PEMFCs.

Role of Surface Strain at Nanocrystalline Pt{110} Facets in Oxygen Reduction Catalysis

Hojin Ahn et al.

Summary: We have developed a synthesis method to study the surface strain-catalytic activity relationship of Pt{110} facets using rhombic dodecahedral Pd@Pt core-shell nanocrystals. The electrocatalytic activity of the Pd@Pt nanocrystals decreased as the Pt shells became thinner and applied more in-plane compressive surface strain. Density functional theory calculations revealed the characteristic strain-activity relationship of Pt{110} facets.

Why Does Pt Shell Bearing Tensile Strain Still Have Superior Activity for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction?

Da Zhou et al.

Summary: Nanoparticles with a Au core and a Pt shell (Au@Pt-x ML) exhibited superior activity towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The extent of enhancement of the ORR activity and the adsorption strength of oxygen-containing species increased with decreasing Pt shell thickness. SERS results showed different spectral characteristics of adsorbed CO compared to pc-Pt.

In Situ/Operando Electrocatalyst Characterization by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Janis Timoshenko et al.

Summary: X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a crucial method for investigating the structure and composition of heterogeneous catalysts, revealing the nature of active sites and establishing links between structural motifs, local electronic structure, and catalytic properties. Recent advancements in instrumentation and data analysis approaches for deciphering X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra have been discussed, with emphasis on applications in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, particularly in electrocatalysis.

Dimensional-Dependent Effects in Platinum Core-Shell-Based Catalysts for Fuel Cell Applications

Nishchal Bharadwaj et al.

Summary: The ORR activity of platinum catalysts can be affected by tuning the dimension, with one-dimensional Pt catalysts showing higher efficiency. Modeling of one-dimensional Pt-90 nanorods revealed improved ORR activity, particularly when incorporating core-shell effects. The activity modulation is mainly governed by strain and charge-transfer effects, providing fundamental insights into the dimensional effect of catalysts toward ORR activity.

Yusuf Pradesar et al.

Summary: PtCo/n-NCS, supported by natto-like N-doped carbon spheres, shows excellent catalytic activity and high durability for the ORR, with a high electron-transfer number and Pt mass activity. The n-NCS provide a large surface area and graphitic-N structures to enhance the four-electron transfer.
