High-throughput screening of metal-organic frameworks for hydrogen purification

Shihui Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a computer-aided high-throughput screening strategy for the selection of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CH4/H-2 separation. Using molecular simulation and large-scale calculations, the top-performing MOFs were identified, and the impact of practical factors such as humidity and operation temperature on the performance of the selected adsorbents was explored.

Summary: The powerful independent gradient model (IGM) method has limitations in graphically studying weak interactions. In this article, an improved version of IGM, called IGM based on Hirshfeld partition (IGMH), is proposed to overcome the shortcomings. The rigorous physical background of IGMH is demonstrated through various application examples, showcasing its important value in intuitively understanding interactions in chemical systems.

Efficient and selective capture of xenon over krypton by a window-cage metal-organic framework with parallel aromatic rings

Guodong Li et al.

Summary: Efficient capture and separation of xenon (Xe) and krypton (Kr) from nuclear fuel reprocessing plants is achieved using a microporous MOF (Ni-MOF) with high adsorption capacity and selectivity. The Ni-MOF features two different cavities, one with a size comparable to Xe for excellent binding affinity, and another with a larger pore window for gas adsorption. It exhibits exceptional Xe uptake and Xe/Kr selectivity, making it a promising adsorbent for capturing Xe and Kr.

Covalent organic framework shows high isobutene adsorption selectivity from C4 hydrocarbons: Mechanism of interpenetration isomerism and pedal motion

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: Adsorption and separation of C-4 hydrocarbons are crucial in petrochemical processes. This study investigates the performance of covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) in C-4 separation and finds that these materials exhibit excellent adsorption and separation properties towards isobutene. The correlation between topology parameters and experimental synthesis feasibility is also established.

Multiscale Computational Screening of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Kr/Xe Adsorption Separation: A Structure-Property Relationship-Based Screening Strategy

Wang-qiang Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, six metal-organic frameworks with high Kr/Xe selectivities and large Kr uptakes were identified for potential use in separating and producing Kr/Xe from used nuclear fuel. Further simulations showed that the superior performance of these materials is due to the confinement effect of the pores. Additionally, molecular dynamic simulations suggested that these MOFs can serve as ideal membrane separation materials for Kr from Xe, driven by adsorption and diffusion.

High-Throughput Screening of Anion-Pillared Metal-Organic Frameworks for the Separation of Light Hydrocarbons

Chenkai Gu et al.

Summary: Adsorptive separations of C-1-C-3 light hydrocarbons using MOFs offer potential energy efficiency advantages, however, MOFs with higher selectivity often exhibit lower working capacity. In MOFs, vdW interactions play a dominant role in light hydrocarbon separations, and separation based on molecular sieving is possible when pore sizes are small.

First-Principle Study on the Stability of Lightly Doped (Nb1-xTix)C Complex Carbides and Their Verification in 1045 Steel

Hongwei Zhu et al.

Summary: By calculating the mixing Gibbs free energy and formation enthalpy difference, it was found that (Nb1-xTix)C complex carbides exhibit higher stability compared to pure NbC and TiC. The designed lightly Ti-doped complex carbides show a decrease in formation energy with increasing Ti content, along with mechanical stability and good conductivity. Additionally, the (Nb0.8Ti0.2)C complex carbide was successfully added to 1045 steel as a refiner, displaying stable existence as a face-centered cubic structure under a transmission electron microscope.
