Simultaneous solar-driven seawater desalination and continuous oil recovery

Shiwen Wu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new design of mechanically robust graphene devices that can achieve simultaneous solar-driven vapor generation and continuous oil recovery. The devices have a unique wettability design, where water evaporates on hydrophilic surfaces and oil is recovered through hydrophobic/oleophilic interior channels. The strong photothermal effect of vertical graphene enhances both seawater desalination and oil recovery performance.

Mixed mismatch model predicted interfacial thermal conductance of metal/semiconductor interface*

Zhi-Cheng Zong et al.

Summary: The acoustic mismatch model and diffuse mismatch model are widely used for calculating interfacial thermal conductance. However, due to the difference between the actual interface structure and the assumptions made by these models, the predictions deviate significantly from the actual conductance. The recently proposed mixed mismatch model considers the effect of interface structure on phonon transmission and improves the prediction accuracy, but it requires molecular dynamics simulation. In this work, the mixed mismatch model is simplified by using measured roughness values and taking into account the influence of interface structure on the contact area, resulting in a simple, fast, and accurate prediction of interface thermal conductance. The model is successfully applied to metals and semiconductors, with good agreement with experimental results, making it helpful for understanding interface heat conduction and comparing with measurements.

Flow behaviors of shale oil in kerogen slit by molecular dynamics simulation

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow behavior of multicomponent shale oil in realistic kerogen channels using molecular dynamic simulation. The results show that the flow of shale oil exhibits peristaltic behavior due to the influence of kerogen branched chains. The heavy component forms adsorbed layers, while asphaltene molecules cluster in bulk phase. Increasing driving force and temperature enhance shale oil flow.

Effect of electric field on water free energy in graphene nanochannel

Dezhao Huang et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of external electric fields on the free energy of water molecules in graphene nanochannels was investigated using molecular dynamics simulations and the free energy perturbation method. It was found that the application of an electric field can reduce the thermal energy required to evaporate water from the nanochannels, which is related to the alignment of water molecules in the channels.

Molecular simulation study of oil-water two-phase fluid transport in shale inorganic nanopores

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: The presence of water bridges in calcite nanopores can enhance oil flow and provide theoretical support for shale oil exploration. Decreasing water content leads to a transition from slug flow to laminar flow, resulting in a significant decrease in total volume flux. Liquid-liquid slip effects between water and oil layers positively impact oil flow in calcite nanopores.

Anomalous Impact of Surface Wettability on Leidenfrost Effect at Nanoscale

Yue Wang et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of substrate wettability on the Leidenfrost point temperature of nanoscale water film through molecular dynamics simulations, revealing a new mechanism different from that at the macroscale. The results show that the Leidenfrost point temperature initially decreases and then increases with surface wettability at the nanoscale, which is different from the monotonous increasing trend at the macroscale. The mechanism is elucidated by analyzing the competitive effect of adhesion force, interfacial thermal resistance, and gravity on the Leidenfrost point temperature at different scales.

Maximization and minimization of interfacial thermal conductance by modulating the mass distribution of the interlayer

Lina Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates how interfacial thermal conductance is influenced by modulating the mass distribution of the interlayer in a one-dimensional atomic chain, providing insights into optimizing and designing thermal conductance at the interface. The research shows that the mass distribution corresponding to maximum thermal conductance is not a simple linear or exponential function, but rather resembles a sinusoidal curve around a linear distribution for thicker interlayers. Additionally, abnormal results are explained through analysis of phonon transmission spectra and density of states.
