Quantitative Energy Transfer in Organic Nanoparticles Based on Small-Molecule Ionic Isolation Lattices for UV Light Harvesting

Junsheng Chen et al.

Summary: Fluorescent nanoparticles based on organic dyes, particularly those obtained by hierarchical coassembly such as ultra bright orange-emitting nanoparticles, show promising potential for bioimaging applications. The use of cyanostar anion-receptor in the coassembly process greatly enhances the brightness and energy transfer efficiency of the nanoparticles, making them ideal for future design of functional nanomaterials.

Universal Concept for Bright, Organic, Solid-State Emitters-Doping of Small-Molecule Ionic Isolation Lattices with FRET

Laura Kacenauskaite et al.

Summary: Brightly fluorescent solid-state materials are highly desirable for various applications. However, the close contact between pi-systems often leads to quenching. In this study, small-molecule ionic isolation lattices (SMILES) are developed to efficiently isolate fluorophores and ensure high densities of dyes. By intentionally introducing fluorescent dopants, FRET effects are exploited and superior fluorescent solid-state materials are created with freely tunable spectroscopic properties.

Rigidity and Flexibility in Rotaxanes and Their Relatives; On Being Stubborn and Easy-Going

Rachel E. Fadler et al.

Summary: Rotaxanes are a new class of molecules consisting of macrocycles and threads. In this Review, we examine the mechanical properties of rotaxanes and analyze them using concepts from physical organic chemistry. We find that rotaxanes can exhibit both rigidity and flexibility, which are crucial for their functionality.

Ultrabright Fluorescent Organic Nanoparticles Based on Small-Molecule Ionic Isolation Lattices**

Junsheng Chen et al.

Summary: Ultrabright fluorescent nanoparticles synthesized using a supramolecular approach show high fluorescence quantum yield and brightness due to the hierarchical coassembly of cationic fluorophores with cyanostar anion-receptor complexes. These nanoparticles, stabilized by glycol amphiphiles, exhibit promising potential for cell staining and bioimaging applications. UV excitation of the cyanostar component leads to enhanced brightness by energy transfer to rhodamine emitters in the nanoparticles.
