A strategic review and research roadmap for offshore seaweed aquaculture-A case study from southern Australia

Wouter Visch et al.

Summary: Global seaweed aquaculture production has significantly increased since 2002, mainly in Asian countries, and is predominantly carried out in nearshore areas with wave protection. To meet future demand, production needs to be moved to non-traditional regions and offshore waters. However, the challenges and uncertainties in cultivating seaweed in high-energy offshore environments must be addressed.

Effects of temperature and nutrients on microscopic stages of the bull kelp (Nereocystis luetkeana, Phaeophyceae)

Brooke L. Weigel et al.

Summary: Warming ocean temperatures and low nutrient concentrations have led to declines in bull kelp populations in the Salish Sea. In laboratory experiments, high temperatures had a more negative impact on microscopic stages of bull kelp compared to low nitrogen levels. Gametophytes were most abundant between 10 and 16℃, while sporophyte production peaked at 10-14℃. Field observations confirmed that the thermal limits for gametophyte growth (18℃) and sporophyte production (16-18℃) were reached during the summer. Caution should be taken to prevent prolonged exposure of bull kelp gametophytes to temperatures above 16℃, as it could limit reproduction and recruitment of adult sporophytes.

Ecological interactions mediate projected loss of kelp biomass under climate change

Tom R. Davis et al.

Summary: By considering the ecological interactions between kelp and urchins, the study projected future impacts of climate change on kelp distribution. It found range contractions of kelp at lower latitudes due to ocean warming, but offset by increased kelp biomass at higher latitudes resulting from reductions in urchin herbivory.

Density-dependence and seasonal variation in reproductive output and sporophyte production in the kelp, Ecklonia radiata

Masayuki Tatsumi et al.

Summary: The study found that adult density of Ecklonia does not affect per-capita zoospore production, but due to a minimum zoospore density required for sporophyte production, a decline in population-level output could impact recruitment.

Cold Thermal Priming of Laminaria digitata (Laminariales, Phaeophyceae) Gametophytes Enhances Gametogenesis and Thermal Performance of Sporophytes

Clement Gauci et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of temperature on the fertility and growth of the kelp species Laminaria digitata. It finds that there are persistent effects of temperature on gametogenesis and recruitment within the gametophyte generation, and a cold pre-experimental cultivation enhances the growth and thermal tolerance of juvenile sporophytes. This cross-generational effect suggests that priming of early life cycle stages can increase the resilience and productivity of kelps in marine forest restoration and kelp mariculture.

Variation in Thermal Tolerance of the Giant Kelp's Gametophytes: Suitability of Habitat, Population Quality or Local Adaptation?

Ronan Becheler et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the local adaptation in giant kelp and found that there are variations in temperature tolerance among different regions and populations. However, high latitude populations are not always more heat resilient than low latitude populations. Additionally, the gametophytes of the giant kelp have a large range of temperature tolerance, indicating their resistance.

Population level variation in reproductive development and output in the golden kelp Laminaria ochroleuca under marine heat wave scenarios

Fiona-Elaine Strasser et al.

Summary: Thermal tolerance is often interpreted as the thermal range of a species without considering the adaptive potential of populations. This study investigates the population-specific adaptive variation in microscopic life-stages of a kelp species, Laminaria ochroleuca, under different temperature treatments. The findings suggest genetic differentiation in response to variation in local thermal regimes.

Implications of Genetic Structure for Aquaculture and Cultivar Translocation of the Kelp Ecklonia radiata in Northern New Zealand

Jacob Nepper-Davidsen et al.

Summary: The study found strong genetic structure and low geneflow of the native kelp Ecklonia radiata across sites in four geographic regions on the North Island of New Zealand. There was high genetic differentiation between the Wellington region and other regions, with significant genetic differences within regions as well. Bayesian modeling and redundancy analysis suggested that ocean currents and other factors along the coast shaped the genetic structure and connectivity of E. radiata on the North Island. Based on these findings, it was recommended not to translocate cultivars of E. radiata outside their area of origin to prevent introducing locally absent genotypes to local sub-populations.

In-Culture Selection and the Potential Effects of Changing Sex Ratios on the Reproductive Success of Multiannual Delayed Gametophytes of Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta

Alexander P. J. Ebbing et al.

Summary: The study investigated the growth rates of male and female multiannual delayed gametophyte strains of Saccharina latissima and Alaria esculenta in culture, as well as how changing sex ratios affect reproductive yields of these cultures. Results showed that reproductive yields declined with decreasing male:female ratios, especially at higher culture densities. Female gametophyte densities had a significant impact on reproductive yield, with higher amounts of female gametophyte biomass halting gametophyte reproduction.

The role of seasonality in reproduction of multiannual delayed gametophytes of Saccharina latissima

Alexander P. J. Ebbing et al.

Summary: Research has shown that delayed gametophytes of kelp can reproduce sexually after prolonged vegetative growth, depending on the interaction between light intensity and temperature. Seasonality can be used as an aquaculture tool to better control the reproduction of delayed gametophytes.

Genotypic variation in response to extreme events may facilitate kelp adaptation under future climates

Nahlah A. Alsuwaiyan et al.

Summary: The study found that different genotypes of the Australian kelp responded differently to marine heatwaves, with some being more susceptible and others more resistant. Additionally, significant genotype by environment interactions were observed, indicating that tolerance to thermal stress is influenced by genetic variation.
