Phosphate limitation intensifies negative effects of ocean acidification on globally important nitrogen fixing cyanobacterium

Futing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of acidification on nitrogen fixation by Trichodesmium. The results showed that acidification increased Trichodesmium's phosphorus demands and decreased its nitrogen fixation rates. Acidification also led to an increase in cellular polyphosphate contents, impaired chlorophyll synthesis, and energy production. Predictions suggest that by 2100, acidification and phosphorus stress could significantly decrease global Trichodesmium nitrogen fixation.
