An updated classification of cyanobacterial orders and families based on phylogenomic and polyphasic analysis

Otakar Strunecky et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial taxonomy is undergoing rapid changes due to advancements in 16S rRNA gene sequencing and new classification workflows. A study has reconstructed a robust phylogenomic tree using genomic sequences and established a polyphasic classification system for Cyanobacteria. This system incorporates both phylogenomic and phenotypic data to provide useful information for professionals in the field. However, the study also highlights the need for integrating genomic data to conclusively classify a large number of cyanobacterial genera in the future.

Cryptic Diversity of Black Band Disease Cyanobacteria in Siderastrea siderea Corals Revealed by Chemical Ecology and Comparative Genome-Resolved Metagenomics

Julie L. L. Meyer et al.

Summary: Black band disease is a globally distributed and easily recognizable coral disease. Despite years of study, the etiology of this disease is not completely understood. Through chemical ecology and metagenomic sequencing, unique strains of Roseofilum species were discovered from Siderastrea siderea corals, which differ from other corals in the Caribbean and Pacific. These strains have the genetic capacity to produce lasso peptides, suggesting their potential role in disease etiology.

Cyanobacterial mats as benthic reservoirs and vectors for coral black band disease pathogens

Ethan C. Cissell et al.

Summary: The concurrent rise of conspicuous benthic cyanobacterial mats and coral diseases globally indicates the degradation of coral reefs. Recent research has shown a potential interaction between the expanding cyanobacterial mats and coral disease, particularly black band disease. This interaction poses urgent conservation concerns and challenges for future research.

Shotgun metagenomic sequencing reveals the full taxonomic, trophic, and functional diversity of a coral reef benthic cyanobacterial mat from Bonaire, Caribbean Netherlands

Ethan C. Cissell et al.

Summary: The proliferation of cyanobacteria in aquatic ecosystems worldwide due to anthropogenic factors is a growing concern. Despite extensive research on planktonic cyanobacterial blooms, benthic blooms of mat-forming cyanobacteria, especially on coral reefs, have not received enough attention. A study on the biodiversity of coral reef benthic cyanobacterial mat communities is essential for predicting and mitigating the impact of anthropogenic inputs on these ecosystems.

Diversity of bioactive compound content across 71 genera of marine, freshwater, and terrestrial cyanobacteria

I-Shuo Huang et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial blooms have been on the rise due to climate change and human activities, leading to the accumulation of bioactive compounds that can impact human health and the environment. This study analyzed bioactive metabolites in 71 genera of cyanobacteria from different habitats, revealing varying patterns of metabolite production among freshwater, marine, and terrestrial genera. The findings provide valuable insights for environmental management and highlight the toxin potential of terrestrial cyanobacteria.

The cyanobacterial taxis protein HmpF regulates type IV pilus activity in response to light

Thomas Harwood et al.

Summary: Motility in prokaryotic organisms, such as cyanobacteria, is common and can be regulated by chemotaxis-like systems that sense light indirectly, possibly through alterations in proton motive force. This study demonstrates that cyanobacteria have a GAF-independent means of sensing light to regulate motility and provides insight into how a chemotaxis-like system regulates the T4P motors. The conservation of this system in cyanobacteria suggests it is a ubiquitous means of regulating motility in response to light.
