Smartphone-assisted colorimetric and fluorescent dual-functional peptide-based probe for multianalyte visual detection in 100% aqueous media, living cells and test strips

Lin Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel colorimetric and fluorescent dual-functional peptide-based probe FAHF was designed and prepared using solid phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) technology. FAHF showed high selectivity and rapid response towards Cu2+ and Hg2+ in 100% aqueous media, with recognizable color change observed by naked eye. The low concentrations of Cu2+ and Hg2+ could be accurately detected, with LODs of 61.02 nM and 40.27 nM, respectively. The FAHF-Cu2+ ensemble and FAHF-Hg2+ ensemble formed in situ were used as cascade probes for detecting S2- based on colorimetric and fluorescence off-on response, with LODs of 45.12 nM and 102.38 nM, respectively. Moreover, FAHF was successfully applied for fluorescence imaging of Cu2+, Hg2+, and S2- in living cells, and made into test strips for visual detection and rapid analysis under 365 nm UV lamp.

Feiyang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, three novel dual-cascade targeting fluorescent probes were designed to monitor Fe3+ in hepatic mitochondria. These probes showed good selectivity and sensitivity, and exhibited obvious hepatic-targeting capacity both in vitro and in vivo. The probes, with low toxicity, could specifically target hepatocytes through the galactose residue, which has high affinity to ASGPR. With the assistance of electropositive triphenylphosphine, the probes also displayed favorable mitochondria-targeting capacity.

A novel pyrene-based fluorescent probe for Al3+detection

Yulong Liu et al.

Summary: Based on the classical Schiff base reaction, a fluorescent probe PAI was designed and synthesized through structural modification by introducing Schiff base structure to pyrene unit. The synthesized PAI was characterized by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and HRMS. PAI is a turn-on probe with high selectivity for specific recognition of Al3+ ion, and has a lower limit of detection compared to many other reported probes. The addition of Al3+ ion breaks the carbon-nitrogen double bond of Schiff base in PAI, resulting in a product without PET property and exhibiting enhanced fluorescence and blue color. PAI can also recognize Al3+ ion through test papers, which is beneficial for future research on Al3+ ion sensing.

Dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran based Schiff base for turn on NIR fluorescence sensing of Fe3+, Al3+ and Cr3+ and its application in molecular logic gate

Tiantian Liu et al.

Summary: A novel Schiff base derivative HMA containing dicyanomethylene-4H-pyran unit was designed and synthesized. It shows near-infrared fluorescence enhancement when detecting Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+. The fluorescence experiments indicate that HMA has a large Stokes shift, low detection limit, and large binding constant. The interaction between HMA and Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+ was investigated using NMR, FT-IR, and density functional theoretical calculations. The results suggest that the emission of HMA undergoes an excited state intramolecular proton transfer process, while the coordination of Fe3+, Al3+, and Cr3+ enhances the fluorescence of HMA.

1′-hydroxy-2′-acetonaphthone: A simple fluorescence turn-on signaling probe with high selectivity and sensitivity for Al3+ in pure water

Summary: A highly selective and sensitive fluorescence turn-on sensor for Al3+ detection in pure water using 1'-hydroxy-2'-acetonaphthone (HAN) as a probe has been developed, showing remarkable fluorescence enhancement and efficient response towards Al3+ even in tap water. The huge fluorescence enhancement is attributed to the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) effect, which impedes the interconversion process between keto (K*) and twisted keto (KR*) tautomers of HAN during its ESIPT process, leading to the complete tautomeric arrest of KR* form complexed with Al3+.
