TICT compounds by design: comparison of two naphthalimide-π-dimethylaniline conjugates of different lengths and ground state geometries

Justina Jovaisaite et al.

Summary: Two new TICT compounds were designed by combining a naphthalimide acceptor unit with a dimethylaniline donor through different linkers. Solvation and conformation determined processes were distinguished by studying molecules in solvents of different polarities and solid-state solvation experiments. Non-polar solutions exhibited high fluorescence quantum yields, while increasing polarity resulted in a drop of fluorescence quantum yields due to the emergence of TICT states. Transient absorption spectroscopy revealed that TICT can occur from both the Franck-Condon region and the solvated pre-twisted/planar CT states.

Aggregate emission behaviors and reversible mechanofluorochromic properties of α-cyanostilbene functionalized indolo[3,2-b]carbazole derivatives

Yuyang Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, four novel compounds were synthesized, and their fluorescence performances were investigated. It was found that these compounds exhibited aggregation-induced emission enhancement in solution, and the mechanism behind this enhancement was attributed to the distorted spatial structure of certain groups. Additionally, two of the compounds showed mechanofluorochromic properties, which were a result of changes in the internal structure of the molecules. This study provides an efficient strategy for understanding photophysical properties and designing more mechanofluorochromic materials.

Synthesis of asymmetric indolonaphthyridines with enhanced excited state charge-transfer character

Michael Purdy et al.

Summary: In this study, a new class of asymmetric indolonaphthyridines (IND) derived using a novel high yielding methodology was presented. The absorption properties and excited state charge-transfer character of these novel asymmetric INDs were compared with symmetric INDs. The results showed that the asymmetry of INDs increased the change in dipole moment and excited state charge-transfer character, which was attributed to the increased spatial separation between excited state electron and hole wavefunctions for the asymmetric INDs. The structure-property relationships introduced in this work provide invaluable design principles for the generation of high performance materials.

Structural modification on tetraphenylpyrazine: from polarity enhanced emission to polarity quenching emission and its intramolecular charge transfer mechanism

Haozhong Wu et al.

Summary: This research achieves polarity enhanced emission by studying the intramolecular charge transfer mechanism. The weak emission in non-polar solvents is attributed to hole-electron overlap, while emission enhancement in highly polar solvents is achieved by reducing overlap and increasing hole-electron coupling. Excessive charge separation causes fluorescence quenching in highly polar solvents. These findings provide guidelines for designing new molecular systems with polarity enhanced emission behavior.

Molecular engineering of carbazole-acrylonitrile fluorophores: substituent-dependent optical properties and mechanochromism

Pengfei Chen et al.

Summary: Controlling the fluorescence properties of organic molecules in the aggregation state and understanding the structure-activity relationship are crucial for developing excellent luminophors with tunable solid emission. In this study, a series of carbazole based donor/acceptor type fluorophores functionalized with different substituents were designed and synthesized, exhibiting unique solid luminescence influenced by the substituents. Substituted compounds like CZ-H, CZ-Br, and CZ-CN displayed aggregation-induced emission (AIE), while CZ-N exhibited crystallization-induced emission (CIE) due to packing differences. Introducing bromide substituents in the N-butyl chain of carbazole led to a red-shift in solid emission wavelength, showcasing unique molecular conformation and packing arrangements.
