Stacked antiaromaticity in the π-congested space between the aromatic rings in the anthracene dime

Tomohiko Nishiuchi et al.

Summary: Substances containing two pi-congested aromatic systems have attracted much attention in synthetic studies and exploration of unique properties. This study investigated the stacked antiaromaticity of highly pi-congested anthracene dimers and found relatively weak antiaromatic character.

Frontier Orbital Views of Stacked Aromaticity

Kazuki Okazawa et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that antiaromatic molecules with 4n pi electrons exhibit stacked aromaticity when arranged in a face-to-face manner. In this study, the mechanism of stacked aromaticity was investigated using cyclobutadiene. It was found that the orbital interactions between the singly occupied molecular orbitals (SOMOs) of the monomer unit play a role in the occurrence of stacked aromaticity. Additionally, the stability of antiaromatic molecules in less symmetric conformations was attributed to pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortions.

Three-Dimensional Fully Π-Conjugated Macrocycles: When 3D-Aromatic and When 2D-Aromatic-in-3D?

Ouissam El Bakouri et al.

Summary: Several fully pi-conjugated macrocycles with puckered or cage-type structures were found to exhibit aromatic character. However, they should be described as 2D-aromatic-in-3D structures rather than truly 3D-aromatic compounds. Their aromaticity comes from the fulfillment of specific rules and is related to naphthalene.

Spontaneous Assembly and Three-Dimensional Stacking of Antiaromatic 5,15-Dioxaporphyrin on HOPG

Tsang-Wei Matt Chen et al.

Summary: This study scrutinizes the spontaneous assembly of antiaromatic compounds at the liquid-solid interface using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The research reveals the polymorphism in monolayers characterized by orthogonal and parallel assemblies at different concentrations. The parallel assembly is found to be more stable and dominantly formed at higher concentrations. Moreover, the narrowing of the HOMO-LUMO gap suggests significant molecular orbital interactions.

Realization of Stacked-Ring Aromaticity in a Water-Soluble Micellar Capsule

Si-Yu Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, stacked-ring aromaticity was achieved using a supramolecular approach. A nanocapsule was used to encapsulate antiaromatic complexes, resulting in stable micellar capsules with broad absorption bands. Notably, a non-pi-stacking complex showed pi-stacking behavior in the supramolecular micellar capsule.

Determinant Factors of Three-Dimensional Aromaticity in Antiaromatic Cyclophanes

Hiroyuki Kawashima et al.

Summary: The recent focus has been on the three-dimensional aromaticity arising from the close stacking of two antiaromatic pi-conjugated macrocycles. An antiaromatic Ni(II) norcorrole cyclophane was synthesized and exhibited crystal polymorphism with one structure showing an aligned face-to-face stacking arrangement. Experimental and theoretical evidence supported the presence of three-dimensional aromaticity in this conformation. A comparison with an aromatic Ni(II) porphyrin cyclophane revealed larger intermolecular interactions in the norcorrole cyclophane in solution.

Unexpected Charge Effects Strengthen π-Stacking Pancake Bonding

Zhong-hua Cui et al.

Summary: Phenalenyls (PLYs) are important synthons in functional and electronic materials, with favorable molecule-to-molecule overlap for electron or hole transport. The unexpected effects of charge on binding energy in PLY dimers and the preference for pi-bonding over sigma-bonding in charged dimers are noteworthy. Long-range interactions and multicenter bonding play important roles in these charged dimers.
