Effect of short-term increase in occlusal vertical dimension on masticatory muscle electrical activities and pressure-to-pain threshold: A crossover clinical study

Adriana Barbosa Ribeiro et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of increased occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) on the electrical activity of masticatory muscles and the pressure-to-pain threshold (PPT) in asymptomatic participants. The results showed that an increase in OVD did not significantly affect the electrical activity in the masticatory muscles or pressure-to-pain threshold in asymptomatic participants.

The intensity of awake bruxism episodes is increased in individuals with high trait anxiety

Madonna Rofaeel et al.

Summary: This study found that individuals with higher levels of trait anxiety exhibited increased masseter muscle activity and intensity of wake-time tooth clenching episodes. However, no between-group differences were found in postural activity and duration of tooth clenching episodes.

Evaluation of masticatory muscle response to clear aligner therapy using ambulatory electromyographic recording

Tiantong Lou et al.

Summary: Clear aligner therapy is associated with a transient increase in masticatory muscle activity, potentially due to an increase in parafunctional tooth clenching during wake time. Patients without temporomandibular disorder adapt well to the therapy as masticatory muscle activity decreases towards baseline levels after 2 weeks.

Signal acquisition and analysis of ambulatory electromyographic recordings for the assessment of sleep bruxism: A scoping review

Magdalini Thymi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to review the methods of signal acquisition and analysis using limited-channel ambulatory EMG devices for assessing sleep bruxism, as well as the outcome measures used in related literature. Variability was found in methods among different studies, and there was wide variation in the scoring criteria for sleep bruxism events.

Association between waking-state oral behaviours, according to the oral behaviors checklist, and TMD subgroups

Valeria Donnarumma et al.

Summary: The study found a significant association between waking-state oral behaviors and temporomandibular disorder (TMD) subgroups. The new scoring method for the Oral Behavior Checklist (OBC) allows for differentiation of functional and non-functional behaviors, aiding clinicians in better tailoring treatment for different subtypes of TMD patients.

Oral behaviours and wake-time masseter activity in patients with masticatory muscle pain

D. Ramanan et al.

Summary: In wake-time settings, women with MMP exhibit longer duration of masseter muscle activity compared to pain-free controls, while the number of contraction episodes remains similar between the two groups. There is no clear association between self-reported oral behaviors and masseter muscle activity in awake patients with MMP.
