Systematic investigations on the coating degradation mechanism during the steam oxidation of Cr-coated Zry-4 at 1200°C

Junkai Liu et al.

Summary: The isothermal oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zircaloy-4 in steam at 1200 degrees C has been comprehensively investigated. The oxidation kinetics transition occurs when Zr outward diffusion and precipitation of ZrO2 at the Cr coating grain boundaries reach the Cr2O3/Cr interface. The outward diffused Zr reduces Cr2O3 scale to Cr and forms pores at the Cr2O3/Cr interface and inside the Cr2O3 scale after the transition. These interfacial pores affect the oxidation mechanism of Cr-coated Zry-4, and the coating failure and oxidation of the Zry-4 substrate occur when the thickness of the outer Cr2O3 scale decreases to a certain value.

Transient experiments on oxidation and degradation of Cr-coated Zircaloy in steam up to 1600 °C

Junkai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the transient oxidation behavior of magnetron-sputtered chromium-coated Zircaloy-4 in steam up to 1600 degrees C, revealing that coating failure and rapid oxidation occurred at 1300-1400 degrees C due to various factors such as thickness decrease of the outer dense Cr2O3 scale and phase transformation of ZrO2-x to cubic ZrO2-y.

Interdiffusion behavior between Cr and Zr and its effect on the microcracking behavior in the Cr-coated Zr-4 alloy

Ji-Shen Jiang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that high-temperature Cr-Zr interdiffusion results in the formation of a ZrCr2 layer, consumption of the Cr coating, and interfacial roughening. Under external loading, a significant amount of cracks are generated in the brittle interlayer and some interfacial cracks are formed and grow at the ZrCr2/Zr-4 interface.

Steam oxidation of Cr-coated Sn-containing Zircaloy solid rod at 1000 °C

Junkai Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the steam oxidation behavior of Cr-coated Zry-4 alloy at 1000 degrees C and observed various interesting phenomena during the oxidation process. The diffusion of Sn from the Zry-4 substrate into the coating, Kirkendall effect of Sn-containing precipitates, outward diffusion behavior of Zr, and selective oxidation mechanism of Zr particles were studied. Voids at the Cr2O3/Cr interface mainly result from vacancy condensation, and amorphization of Cr2O3 adjacent to the voids was observed with its mechanism discussed.
