Alumino-Silicate Structural Formation during Alkali-Activation of Metakaolin: In-Situ and Ex-Situ ATR-FTIR Studies

Sujitra Onutai et al.

Summary: Attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was utilized to investigate the reaction mechanisms and early stage structure formation of alkali-activated materials (AAMs). The impact of different alkali activator solutions on the structure formation and reaction mechanisms of AAMs was examined. The results demonstrated that the ATR-FTIR spectra of AAMs exhibited peak shifts in the range of 1300-650 cm(-1), indicating the dissolution and reorientation of metakaolin, depending on the activator solution used. The different reactions of metakaolin with different alkali activator solutions led to varying phases, microstructures, and mechanical properties of the produced AAMs.

Oxidative decomposition of ammonium ion with ozone in the presence of cobalt and chloride ions for the treatment of radioactive liquid waste

Haruka Aihara et al.

Summary: The study found that the oxidative decomposition of NH4+ with O-3 in acidic to mild basic solutions was greatly enhanced by the presence of Co2+ catalyst and Cl. In alkaline solutions, high conversion of NH4+ into NO3 was achieved even without Co2+ and Cl. The presence of Co2+ and Cl led to the formation of chloramines NHxCl3 x, x = 1-3, which greatly increased the decomposition rate of NH4+.
