An action for nonlinear dislocation dynamics

Amit Acharya

Summary: An action functional is developed for nonlinear dislocation dynamics, aiming to use effective field theory to describe the macroscopic behavior of plasticity in crystalline solids. This work reveals connections between continuum mechanics, material science of defects in solids, effective field theory techniques in physics, and fracton tensor gauge theories.

Development of mean-field continuum dislocation kinematics with junction reactions using de Rham currents and graph theory

Kyle Starkey et al.

Summary: This work presents how the evolution of dislocation networks and their reactions are introduced into continuum dislocation models. By leveraging de Rham currents theory and Frank's second rule, the study ensures that the structure of the dislocation network satisfies classical relations. Additionally, the introduction of junction point density as a new state variable represents the distribution of junction points in the crystal.

The mathematical foundations of anelasticity: existence of smooth global intermediate configurations

Christian Goodbrake et al.

Summary: This study derives a sufficient condition for the existence of global intermediate configurations by starting from a multiplicative decomposition of the deformation gradient, showing that these global configurations are unique up to isometry. For radially symmetric deformations, isometric embeddings of intermediate configurations are constructed and residual stress fields are computed explicitly.

On Nye's lattice curvature tensor

Fabio Sozio et al.

Summary: This paper reexamines Nye's lattice curvature tensor with the framework of Cartan's moving frames and extends it to arbitrary dislocation distributions. The lattice curvature is defined as a material triplet of vectors obtained from the material covariant derivative of the lattice frame, showing a relationship with the contorsion tensor. It is also demonstrated that the lattice curvature tensor can be used to express the Riemann curvature of the material manifold in the linearized approximation.
