LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Effects of pre-strain on the nanoindentation behaviors of metallic glass studied by molecular dynamics simulations

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: The study shows that pre-stress has an impact on the mechanical and deformation performance of metallic glasses. Compressive pre-stress leads to a transition from hardening to weakening effects, while tensile pre-stress directly weakens the mechanical performance. Additionally, the magnitude and sign of pre-stress also influence the morphology of shear bands.

Influence of stoichiometry on indentation-induced plasticity in CuZr glasses

Karina E. Avila et al.

Summary: Plasticity in metallic glasses depends on their stoichiometry, with different compositions affecting the plasticity mechanism. The Cu64.5Zr35.5 sample shows localized strain formation in the form of shear bands, while plasticity is more uniform in the other samples.

Response of an amorphous/crystalline interface to nanoindentation: an atomistic study

Karina E. Avila et al.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations show a strong asymmetry in the response of bilayer systems with crystal-top and glass-top configurations, with the crystal-top system being the weakest and the glass-top system being the hardest. The presence of dislocations at the interface affects plastic activity and shear band formation differently in the two systems.

Interaction between parallel shear bands in a metallic glass

Karina E. Avila et al.

Summary: In this study using molecular dynamics simulations on a CuZr metallic glass sample, it was observed that the subsequent formation of parallel shear bands can partially relax the core structure of previously formed shear bands, leading to a reduction in potential energy and a return of previous plastic regions. This interaction between shear bands allows for the restoration of the disrupted icosahedral matrix and the eventual recovery of shear transformation zones.
