Bilateral increase in MEG planar gradients prior to saccade onset

Jasper H. Fabius et al.

Summary: To distinguish eye movements from actual external motion of objects, the visual system is believed to anticipate the consequences of eye movements. This study used magnetoencephalography to investigate the timing and lateralization of visually evoked planar gradients before saccade onset. The results showed a widespread increase in residual planar gradients, indicating predictive pre-saccadic changes involving both the current and future receptive fields.

Visual Functions of the Primate Superior Colliculus

Ziad M. Hafed et al.

Summary: The superior colliculus (SC) is a subcortical brain structure that plays a crucial role in controlling orienting behaviors in nonhuman primates. Recent investigations have revealed the visual pattern analysis capabilities of the primate SC, indicating its importance in guiding orienting movements. Its anatomical proximity to visual inputs and motor control apparatuses, as well as its ascending feedback projections to the cortex, confirm its role in active perception.

Asymmetries around the visual field: From retina to cortex to behavior

Eline Kupers et al.

Summary: The neural circuitry of the visual system is organized into multiple maps of the visual field, which are orderly and non-uniform. Non-uniformities in the visual field emerge from the retina and become more pronounced in subsequent processing stages. The eccentricity gradient and polar angle asymmetries in cone density, retinal ganglion cell density, and cortical representations contribute to visual performance differences and asymmetries.

Topographic organization of eye-position dependent gain fields in human visual cortex

Jasper H. Fabius et al.

Summary: The ability to move introduces animals with the problem of sensory ambiguity. This ambiguity can be resolved through changes in neural response gain. The study found a systematic distribution of population eye-position dependent gain fields, suggesting that signals beyond retinotopy are accessible in the early visual hierarchy, providing potential to solve sensory ambiguity and optimize sensory processing information.

Superior colliculus saccade motor bursts do not dictate movement kinematics

Tong Zhang et al.

Summary: A systematic analysis reveals that the motor bursts in the superior colliculus (SC) neurons do not determine the kinematics of rapid eye movements. The spatial code and rate code of SC neurons exhibit dissociation, suggesting that saccade-related motor bursts in the SC do not necessarily dictate movement kinematics.

Faster Detection of Darks than Brights by Monkey Superior Colliculus Neurons

Tatiana Malevich et al.

Summary: Visual processing is divided into ON and OFF channels from the retina to the primary visual cortex. This study investigated the timing of neural processing for dark and bright stimuli in the superior colliculus of monkeys. The results showed that, regardless of individual neural sensitivity, dark stimuli elicited faster neural responses compared to bright stimuli. These findings suggest the existence of a visual neural pathway that contributes to behavioral differences between the processing of darks and brights, emphasizing the importance of temporal aspects in visual neural coding.

Justify Your Alpha: A Primer on Two Practical Approaches

Maximilian Maier et al.

Summary: The default use of α level of .05 is not optimal for decision-making based on data. This article introduces two approaches to choose a better α level, minimizing Type 1 and Type 2 error rates and preventing Lindley's paradox. Although the methods have limitations, they can improve statistical inferences and the efficiency of scientific research, especially with large sample sizes.

Asymmetries in visual acuity around the visual field

Summary: Human vision shows better performance along the horizontal and lower vertical meridians at fixed eccentricity locations. The asymmetries are most pronounced at the cardinal meridians and decrease gradually as the angular distance from the vertical meridian increases.

Midbrain activity shapes high-level visual properties in the primate temporal cortex

Amarender R. Bogadhi et al.

Summary: Recent fMRI experiments have identified the floor of the superior temporal sulcus (fSTS) in the macaque temporal cortex as the primary cortical target of superior colliculus (SC) activity in relation to attention. The inactivation of SC decreases attentional modulations in fSTS neurons by increasing their activity for ignored stimuli and decreasing their activity for attended stimuli. Furthermore, SC inactivation leads to a reduction in the selectivity of fSTS neurons for particular visual objects.

Cortical magnification in human visual cortex parallels task performance around the visual field

Noah C. Benson et al.

Summary: The study found significant radial asymmetries in the human primary visual cortex, which are more pronounced than those in the retina and are correlated between monozygotic twin pairs. This suggests a partially heritable link between visual field asymmetries and behavior, highlighting the importance of cortical topography in visual processing.

A Dynamic Model of Deciding Not to Choose

Angus Reynolds et al.

Summary: The study proposes a dynamic theory of decisions not to choose the correct option, highlighting the importance of not-know judgments in various domains. Experimental results show that high similarity increases the probability of not-know responses. Individual differences in the use of not-know responses were also identified in the study.
