Microbiota alters the metabolome in an age- and sex- dependent manner in mice

Kirsty Brown et al.

Summary: Commensal bacteria play a significant role in mammalian metabolism. This study investigates the impact of microbiota, age, and sex on metabolite profiles in various body sites of mice. The microbiota has the highest influence on the gastrointestinal tract, while age and microbiota similarly contribute to urine, serum, and peritoneal fluid metabolome variations. Moreover, age mainly drives metabolome variations in the liver and spleen, while sex has a significant impact on all sites except the ileum.

The blood-brain barrier in aging and neurodegeneration

Emily G. Knox et al.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier is essential for maintaining brain homeostasis and preventing the entry of toxins into the brain. However, it deteriorates with age and plays a role in age-related disorders. Recent research suggests that microbial-derived metabolites may have the potential to protect and restore the blood-brain barrier. This review focuses on the components of the barrier, levels of disruption, current drugs and therapeutics, and the effects of microbial-derived metabolites.

The microbiota-gut-brain axis participates in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion by disrupting the metabolism of short-chain fatty acids

Weiping Xiao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that modulating the gut microbiome via fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can improve cognitive impairment and depressive-like behaviors caused by chronic cerebral hypoperfusion. FMT increases the level of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), promotes gut function, and improves cognitive performance. Long-term SCFA supplementation also reduces inflammation and hippocampal neuronal apoptosis.

C5aR1 antagonism alters microglial polarization and mitigates disease progression in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Angela Gomez-Arboledas et al.

Summary: Multiple studies have shown the involvement of the complement cascade in the progression of Alzheimer's disease, but the specific role of C5a-C5aR1 signaling in this neurodegenerative disease is still unclear. However, using the C5aR1 antagonist PMX205 in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease has shown promising results in reducing neurodegeneration, amyloid load, and synaptic loss, suggesting its potential as a therapeutic target.

The Contribution of Gut Microbiota-Brain Axis in the Development of Brain Disorders

Jessica Maiuolo et al.

Summary: This article explores the relationship between gut microbiota and neurological pathologies. Scientific studies have shown that the co-metabolism between microbiota and the host system is crucial for immune system organization, and that microbiota plays a significant role in the development, physiology, and cognitive functions of the brain. The alterations in gut microbiota have been closely associated with the onset of various neurological pathologies, suggesting that microbiota could be a valuable target for reducing or modulating the incidence of certain neurological diseases.
