Thermodynamic measurements and assessments for LiCl-NaCl-KCl-UCl3 systems

J. A. Yingling et al.

Summary: Thermodynamic descriptions of higher-order molten salt systems are crucial for the practical utilization of molten salt technologies. Despite this, there is still a lack of a comprehensive description of the Li-Na-K-U(III) chloride system, which is essential for pyroprocessing and molten salt reactor development. To address this issue, we utilized the CALPHAD approach and incorporated all available phase equilibria and related thermodynamic measurements, including new DSC observations, to obtain accurate thermodynamic properties. A novel intermediate compound in the NaCl-UCl3 system was discovered during this study. Our methodology for quantifying uncertainty in phase equilibria obtained from DSC measurements provides significant advantages in phase diagram analysis. The assessed systems in this study have been included in the publicly accessible Molten Salt Thermal Properties Database - Thermochemical.

Evaluation of thermophysical properties of the LiCl-KCl system via ab initio and experimental methods

Kai Duemmler et al.

Summary: Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) are seen as a potential solution for safer and more economical nuclear power generation and industrial heat supply. This study focuses on the lack of data on fundamental properties of fuels and coolants for MSRs and utilizes computational methods to fill this knowledge gap. By using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations and ab initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) simulations, the density, compressibility, heat capacity, enthalpy of mixing, and Gibbs free energy of mixing of the LiCl-KCl system were determined. The results provide a basis for further evaluation of thermophysical properties using AIMD methods.

A comparison of actinide halides for use in molten salt reactor fuels

Bastien Faure et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a renewed interest in molten salt reactor (MSR) technologies. However, most MSR projects use fluoride or chloride melts as fuel salts, with little mention of bromide and iodide salts. This paper compares the characteristics of bromide and iodide salts with fluoride and chloride compounds, and updates their potential as nuclear salts.

TAF-ID: An international thermodynamic database for nuclear fuels applications

C. Gueneau et al.

Summary: The TAF-ID database, developed using the Calphad method, is a computational tool for performing thermodynamic calculations on nuclear fuel materials and their chemical interactions with surrounding materials. The validation of the database against experimental data has provided confidence in its maturity and quality. Access to the database is restricted to participating countries, but there is also a public version available for NEA member countries.

Actinide Molten Salts: A Machine-Learning Potential Molecular Dynamics Study

Manh-Thuong Nguyen et al.

Summary: Understanding actinide molten salts at a molecular level is crucial for nuclear energy applications, but computational studies of heavy elements in condensed phases are challenging due to the complexity of electronic structures. By adopting a machine-learning approach, researchers were able to efficiently gain valuable information about the bonding structures, thermodynamics, and dynamics of these materials at varying temperatures. The study also revealed unexpected findings about the coordination environments and entropy-scaling laws of actinides in molten salts.

Norm-Conserving Pseudopotentials and Basis Sets to Explore Actinide Chemistry in Complex Environments

Jun-Bo Lu et al.

Summary: A new set of norm-conserving pseudopotentials and Gaussian basis sets for the actinide series has been developed and tested for accuracy and reliability. The new pseudopotentials successfully reproduce structures and energetics, particularly redox processes, with medium- and large-core options available. Transferability issues are discussed, with the medium-core set being suitable for multiple oxidation states and the large-core set only for early series elements and low oxidation states. This work fills a critical gap in the literature for studying the chemistry of 5f-block elements in the condensed phase.
