Site-specific Heterogeneity of Multi-domain Human Serum Albumin and its Origin: A Red Edge Excitation Shift Study†

Nilimesh Das et al.

Summary: Conformational heterogeneity is a defining characteristic of proteins. This study used red edge excitation shift (REES) to investigate the conformational heterogeneity of multi-domain human serum albumin, and found that the behavior and dynamics of side chains vary depending on the domain being examined. In the unfolded state, the extent of REES becomes unimportant due to the presence of free water and disruption of protein structure. Water molecules play a significant role in providing rigidity to domain-II.

Summary: This study investigates the spectroscopy and structural dynamics of a deep eutectic mixture with varying water content using 2D IR and THz spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations accurately describe the dependence of spectroscopic signatures on water content. The results demonstrate that the combination of structure-sensitive spectroscopies and molecular dynamics simulations provides molecular-level insights into the heterogeneity of such mixtures.

Deep Eutectic Solvents: Green Approach for Cathode Recycling of Li-Ion Batteries

Chinmayee Padwal et al.

Summary: The demand for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) in modern electronics and electrification of transportation has led to a significant increase in solid waste. Recycling strategies using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) provide an economical and environmentally friendly solution for recovering metals from spent LIBs. The mechanism and performance of DES in terms of leaching efficiency, time, temperature, and metal recovery rates are discussed. Opportunities for further development of DES for metal recovery in various industries are also outlined.

Temperature-Dependent Dielectric Relaxation in Ionic Acetamide Deep Eutectics: Partial Viscosity Decoupling and Explanations from the Simulated Single-Particle Reorientation Dynamics and Hydrogen-Bond Fluctuations

Kallol Mukherjee et al.

Summary: This study investigates the collective single-particle reorientational relaxations and H-bond dynamics of acetamide in deep eutectic solvents through temperature-dependent dielectric relaxation measurements and molecular dynamics simulations. The results suggest a strong connection between the measured dielectric relaxation and simulated dynamics, showing significant microheterogeneity in these media. Additionally, a translation-rotation decoupling between the simulated reorientation and center-of-mass diffusion times is observed.

Correlating Bromelain's activity with its structure and active-site dynamics and the medium's physical properties in a hydrated deep eutectic solvent†

Nilimesh Das et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of bromelain in a deep eutectic solvent and finds that bromelain adopts different structural conformations and activity levels at different DES concentrations. The study reveals that the compact structural conformation and flexibility of the active site of bromelain are favorable for its proteolytic activity, and that a medium with increased polarity and decreased viscosity enhances its activity. These insights could provide useful guidelines for the rational design of DESs as biocatalytic media.
